Guitar master and singer Doc Watson was listed in critical condition Thursday at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after a fall at his home in Deep Gap earlier this week.
Watson's daughter, Nancy, said in a telephone interview that Watson fell Monday.
She said he didn't break any bones but that he's "real sick."

Well put.
I went to the Newport Folk Festival in 65, then
Vietman took up the next two or three years.
Bummed around after that as a traveling dulcimore
player, Atlanta, New Orleans,West Coast.
Ended up in Seattle apprentice to a dulcimore
maker but then discovered blacksmithing and had to
choose, the smithing was hard on the hands but
I was really better at it than music.
Doc was a comfort and joy for many a mile.
As Jack Palance once said,
“ Growing old ain’t for sissies”.
An American Treasure
For sure.
For some reason that reminds me of the first time I took a former girlfriend to see an Angel game at ANGEL stadium. While watching the game she asked me, "Who's the team in gray?" I said, that's the New York Yankees. She then asked, "Who's the team in white?" She wasn't kidding.
I asked her if she knew where she was. She said, of course, I'm in Angel stadium. People all around us heard this exchange and were laughing their butts off, as was I. My former girlfriend's name? Angel.
True story.

Settin’ on top of the world - Doc Watson
Yeah, but what would you do without them? :)
Wonderful
Gnight Gang.
Better version but not as good as the Muskrats version.

Great! Thanks, L V.
One of my fondest memories was sitting in the front row of a small venue performance of Doc and Merle in Austin. Awestruck.
There will never be another like him.

Doc Watson - I am a Pilgrim
A beautiful song.
A fave on Sundays, but we often forget on Friday nights
“... he added a bunch of extra notes with his secret third hand.”
Indeed. Saw him several times at the Palomino in LA. What an extraordinary artist. He was one of the few musicians that survived the “great folk music scare” of the 60’s (obscure Martin Mull reference). He was great before it. And great after it.
Indeed we do mylife, indeed we do. ;o)
Well, I was going to ping you, but you beat me here. The first song I ever heard him play live was Tennessee Stud.
And you know me - I have to get in the guitar story. Around 1968, Doc started playing a guitar ("Ol' Hoss") made by D.W. Gallagher and his son, Don Gallagher.
Here's what I have on my iTunes right now - an old Doc Watson, Clint Howard, and Fred Price 24-track album called Old Timey Concert.
Not so much flat-picking as Americana, hills, and bluegrass. Found one song on YouTube from the album very quickly.
Guy Clark says it best “ I have seen the David, I’ve seen the Mona Lisa too, I have heard Doc Watson play the Columbus Stockade blues”
