The daughter-in-law of Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, who has served as a volunteer high school track and field coach in Oregon, was fired on Monday after an investigation proved that she escorted a 17-year-old member of her boys track squad to the school's prom.

As reported by the Associated Press, 41-year-old Melissa Bowerman, the daughter-in-law of waffle-sole inventor Bill Bowerman, escorted an unnamed 17-year-old on the Condon (Ore.) High track team to the school's prom after the runner told her he lacked a date for the prom. Bowerman, who is married to 73-year-old co-coach Jon Bowerman and also has a son on the same team, told the AP that she offered to take the student to prom in part to motivate him to improve his grades in his English class.

If she can also carry an outboard motor from the swamp up to the truck and chop wood, I got some cousins who are looking for a woman — they’s hard to find out here.

I’ll wager the kid has been harmed far more by his coach’s firing. In fact, from reading the article it seems she was simply doing him a kindness. Like the saying goes, no good deed goes unpinished.

"In the meantime, Jon Bowerman has said he will consider resigning from the program if his wife is not allowed to return, a stunning turn of events just weeks after the school officially inaugurated a brand new, state of the art track that was made possible by a trade of the family heirloom Bowerman waffle iron that Jon's father, former Oregon track coach and Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, used to make running shoe soles for Nike that provided better traction.

"The only thing we've done wrong is build them a new track and get uniforms and build them a powerhouse program," Jon Bowerman told the AP. "If she doesn't come back, I'm not coming back."

AFAICT, her "crime" was that she's still semi-hot (she's 41, after all). The school board is so stupid it's amazing they remember to breathe.

She looks a little like Gingrich’s wife before all the surgery.

first all schools and “proms” should be separated, they should not be associated with each other.

I am sure the track coach is proud to see his daughter is an escort.

lol

1) Turn off the TV (I cut Glee off my schedule with the pilot and predicted that my daughter -- a music teacher -- would have nothing but trouble as long as it was on the air. I was right.)

2) Home school.

It's too bad that the crazies have taken 2 of the most memorable HS experiences -- choir and prom -- and turned them into major negatives. I was first aware of the prom business when my kids were that age. NONE of them went to the prom, except my oldest. And she had to go because she was chosen by her classmates to sing. As I said above, we were there too, so nothing untoward happened to her. My others wanted nothing to do with prom. This was in the late '70s and early '80s in TX. Sad.

First things first.

She is definitely not guilty. A very good looking woman without looking like she’s for sale on the corner or trying out for a Maxim cover.

The track team is for a school that has 78 students. 39 students are on the track team and they apparently are a state powerhouse.

This is what happens when the track coach is more powerful than the superintendent.

If she truly didn’t do anything wrong, she should get her job back. That being said, it was extremely poor judgement for an adult teacher to go with a student to the prom and slow dance with him. In today’s day and age, we read about teacher X involved with student Y so much that it makes parents heads spin. The prom is for the students and not the adults (the adults serve as chaperones). Unlike when I was in high school, there are a lot of students who now go just with their friends (and no dates).

Can’t blame her.
17 goes into 41 more than 73 does.

I received the same impression. The kid didn’t have someone to go with and she said she’d accompany him. I don’t get the feeling there was anything more to it than that.

Picture of the outboard motor and ax is a pre-req.
