Los Angeles became the largest city in the nation Wednesday to approve a ban on plastic bags at supermarket checkout lines, handing a major victory to clean-water advocates who sought to reduce the amount of trash clogging landfills, the regions waterways and the ocean.
Egged on by actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus and an array of environmental groups, the City Council voted 13 to 1 to phase out plastic bags over the next 12 months at an estimated 7,500 stores. Councilman Bernard Parks cast the lone no vote.

Some entrepreneur should set up a stand outside supermarkets selling plastic bags.
Stupid LibTards and unintended consequences...
The companies that make all those plastic bags for those 7,200 stores will not be as profitable and will wind up laying people off or closing. That’s a heck of a lot of plastic bags per day...
Plus, those bags are infinitely recyclable unlike paper. The polyethylene in those bags can be remelted and made into just about anything made with polypro or polyethylene.
stupid stupid stupid
BTW, you need to move. That particular array you have pictured would be shredded into confetti by the wind inside of 10 minutes where I am.
Is there anything they don’t want to control (besides gov. spending)?
I’m waiting for “Elaine” and her friends to protest the waste of trees printing the LA Times.
I was projecting to the future.
My friend has gone to Save Mart and bought those bags, then takes them to the marker and demands the 10 cents off the total because brought her own bags.
You have to think like a leftist. If some people lose jobs because plastic bags are prohibited, they will then have to go on various forms of public assistance paid for by ever higher taxes. All good.
Maybe someone could make a plastic liner to put in these bags. After use they could be recycled. Then this a ban on them at supermarkets. Does this mean that if you go to a super wal-mart they can use plastic bags on the side that doesn't sell groceries and ban them on the side that does?
Well they could just recycle the plastic bags that are in use today, right? But then, they’re not so why would they recycle those liners?
The smell of Liberalism, they can never make up their minds. Paper is bad! Plastic is bad! What a joke..
They're just following the UN directive to kill of 90% of the population.
Hope they enjoy the salmonella soaked cloth sacks.
Oh my goodness but doesn't the "holier than thou" just drip right out of their little behinds as they prance away from us lowly "plastic users" ? What else am I supposed to use to pick up dog poo? Believe me I reuse everything possible that does not pose a health risk. A-because I am cheap. B-because I not provided approved items by the government.
Julie three last names needs to stop telling other people what to do....Wait maybe she is "julia"
Yep, that’s what we do. So they will use nasty, disease causing cloth sacks and BUY small trash can liners that are plastic.
Liberalism is DEFINITELY a mental disorder.
So people bringing their own reusable bags have to calculate just how many groceries will fit. Bye bye impulse buying. Grocers will see sales dip as people drive to the next town to shop....law of unintended consequence. Watch businesses leave LA proper. City council, mayor and others will be crying when the pension funds start to shrink. Maybe Julia will kick some $ in.
We have a locally owned market, features local produce, fish (we're in the pacific northwest), and meats. They offer cash back for returned paper bags, and discounts for using your own bags. I doubt they are the only ones....
We reuse plastic shopping bags. Catbox, loaded disposable diapers, dogs lawn cigars, the trash pickup requires that sort of refuse to be IN a plastic bag!
what!?! the environmental wackos were the ones that pushed plastic bags on us instead of paper! now they want to ban the plastic too!?
Without regard to whether this is a good idea (or not) what authority does a city council have to do anything like this?
This... insanity. Simply because if they can ban plastic bags, then there isn’t anything beyond their purview. Waaay stupid.
In my more uncharitable moments, sometimes a complete economic collapse sounds like a pretty good deal, because as a society we can wipe the slate clean, start over, and asshats that foist this kind of nonsense on everyone will have to get real jobs, or die.
Hm.
Do you really think “they” are gonna let you use paper sacks again?
I bet you want to smoke in a bar too, crazy talk. Jeez.
“what’s up with these people?”
They are totalitarian control freaks.. neurotics.. psychopaths.. etc.
Good Luck everybody.
