Half of Florida high school students fail reading test

Nearly half of Florida high school students failed the reading portion of the state's new toughened standardized test, education officials said on Friday.

Results this year from the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test showed 52 percent of freshman students and 50 percent of sophomores scored at their grade levels.

Students in the 10th grade must pass the exam in order to eventually graduate but can retake it if they fail.

The results came days after the Florida State Board of Education voted to lower the standards needed to pass the writing part of the test, known as FCAT. The test is administered in public elementary, middle and high schools.

The board took the action in an emergency meeting when preliminary results indicated only about one-third of Florida students would have passed this year.

"We are asking more from our students and teachers than we ever have, and I am proud of their hard work," Florida Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson said in a statement.

Just think, with a little more effort and a few thousand dollars more per student in education spending, we’ll be approaching Medieval levels of literacy.

Now, are any parents suing the individual members of the teachers union for non-performance/failure?

What a delicious idea...for anyone in any state. If your state ranks near the bottom, as mine does, the teacher's Union should be sued also for failure to comply with teaching standards.

But, but, but.....when Jeb Bush was Florida governor, he was supposed to have drastically improved the flopping Florida school system like he was Sir Lancelot rescuing the fair maiden from drowning.

He was "The Education Governor".

Said Michael Grebe, president of the the Bradley Foundation, "During his administration and since, Florida students have made incredible gains. Governor Bush was at the forefront of education reform in the state."

Not.

He went through the motions, but not much changed of any lasting value.

Stay outta da Bushes.

Florida has long been known for its lousy public schools. Still, this is alarming.

Black Americans can be taught to read and write just as effectively as White Americans.

They can, but not if they don't want to learn. And there is nothing that any school can do about that.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

"We are asking more from our students and teachers than we ever have, and I am proud of their hard work," Florida Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson said in a statement.

“Florida has long been known for its lousy public schools.”

When one of my friend's family moved to FL (from MA) his youngest sister was entering the 10th grade. I remember her saying the subject matter she was covering was stuff she already learned in the 6th and 7th grades.

You can read a book on the computer.

But you cannot play a video game on a book. Give them books. A book is much cheaper than a computer anyway.

"A little KKK talk there?"

Take it as you will, if your mind wanders in that direction. If you noticed, it is a quote from another person. The main thing is, it has come to pass.
