Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

The years 1967 and ‘68 were banner years for Norman Whitfield. He replaced Smokey Robinson as main producer for the Temptations and slowly guided them toward a harder sound.

Whitfield settled into a partnership with Roger Penzabene, who wrote from the heart. These songs were inspired by a drama going on within Penzabene’s marriage, which would end badly. That’s Eddie Kendricks back on lead vocals.

The Temptations: “You’re My Everything”

Penzabene found out that his wife was cheating on him, and it produced this classic. Barrett Strong wrote the piano intro on a piano that had only ten functioning keys. That’s David Ruffin on lead vocals. Shortly after the release of this single, Penzabene killed himself.

The Temptations: “I Wish it Would Rain”

With Penzabene gone, Whitfield partnered with Motown veteran Barrett Strong. David Ruffin left the group, and Dennis Edwards replaced him. This was the first time Whitfield entered the world of psychedelic soul, and it won the duo a Grammy.

Otis Williams introduced Whitfield to the music of Sly & the Family Stone, and at first Whitfield was put off. “I don't want to get into all that crazy shit,” he said. “That ain’t nothing but a little passing fancy.” But a few weeks later, Whitfield laid down the instrumental track of a record that started a whole new direction for his sound. All five Temptations share vocal duties at some point. That’s Mongo Santamaria on conga drums.

In 1967, Norman Whitfield courted immortality, although he didn’t realize it until late ‘68. It started with a song Whitfield and Strong had written in ‘66 and recorded with the Miracles. It didn’t survive quality control because Gordy hated it.

Marvin Gaye recorded it, but there was a battle between Whitfield and Gaye as to how the song should be sung. Eventually Gaye gave in and sang it in a higher key, giving his voice a slight rasp. Gordy hated it.

Then Gladys Knight recorded it in Motown’s attempt to out-soul Aretha Franklin. Gordy still hated it, but he released it, and it became a huge hit for Motown.

Gladys Knight & the Pips: “I Heard it Through the Grapevine”

Fast forward a year. Whitfield persuaded Gordy to release Gaye’s version on an album, even though Gordy still hated the song. Then all of a sudden, R&B DJ’s across America began sampling that one album cut. Now Gordy’s hand was forced, and he agreed to release it as a single. It was the single most important and influential record ever released by Motown up to that time. The instrumental track was groundbreaking.

Marvin Gaye: “I Heard it Through the Grapevine”

When Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded this song in 1970, they used Gaye’s basic treatment. John Fogerty turned it into an 11 minute classic.

In 1969, Norman Whitfield picked up where he had left off with Marvin Gaye. This song was written by Whitfield, Strong and Janie Bradford, and was first recorded by the Temptations as an album track in 1966 with Eddie Kendricks on lead vocal. Now it was Gaye’s turn.

Marvin Gaye: “Too Busy Thing About My Baby”

This was first recorded by the Isley Brothers and written by Whitfield and Strong. Whitfield took the up-tempo item and turned it into slowed-down psychedelic soul.

And thanks for playing 'Last Dance'. Donna Summer was a favorite of mine even though I didn't care much for Disco.
