Charles Krauthammer, the conservative columnist spoke about the use of drones for domestic spying last night.

He blasted the idea:

"A drone is a high-tech version of an old army. It ought to be used in Somalia to hunt bad guys but not in America. Yes you can say we have satellites, we have Google Street, we have everything else, but that is no reason to accept a society where you are always watched by the government.

"I would predict the first guy who uses a second amendment weapon to bring a drone down who is hovering over his house will become a folk hero."

A shoot down is unlikely, but a kamikaze collision would be possible!

I don't know if that's real. I just put 200 rounds out of my Kahr CW45 this morning at the range. You'd think that that itty-bitty copter would show a bit more recoil effect. At LEAST a bit of rifling twist when fired.

I've only flown an R/C heli for a few minutes, and then with a "buddy box" controller attached so I didn't turn it into a pile of debris. That was 20 years ago and it was, IIRC, powered by a .40 glow engine. The copter in the video is a lot larger, powered by a spark-ignition (string trimmer) motor. I'd bet it has a stabilizing gyro to take the edge off of the gun's recoil. Yeah, I think it's real.

There's another guy out there that has a bigger bird that carrys an AA-12 aloft, though it looks extremely unstable.

R/C and guns - a pairing that was inevitable.

Maybe not, if he's naked except for wearing a wig of long dreadlocks and cool shades while using one of those AK-47-looking shotguns. [Have to live in the boonies to appreciate that one.]

Kamikaze counterdrones. Would it work?

Theoretically speaking, probably. Depends on the size of the two vehicles and the closing speed. Impact would, hypothetically speaking, be enhanced (and quite a bit more entertaining) with some refined hydrocarbon-like substance on board the counterdrone in an easily breakable container.

But this is just an educational discussion about what people COULD do, without any advocacy of the same, so I guess that we'll never find out.

A few months ago, one was shot down at a organized hunt in the southeast (SC?). Some PETA type of group delployed it, to see what the hunters were doing. Probably not best to target bird hunters with a drone. Anyone remember the details?

I’m thinking electronic counter measures ie cause problems with the control signals or figure some way to cause sparks/short circuits on the control system circuit boards.

It’s silent & with the use of directional antennas it would be discreet as well. Gonna have to look up some of my old friend in the ham radio world.

Posse Comitatus is a false sense of security; the Constitution gives the Congress the ability to use the militia to enforce laws {if you’re going to nit-pick, then they’ll use guardsmen; which are considered militia by statute (and some state Constitutions); plus they get the “plausible deniability” of “training them to go overseas”}.

Of course the above assumes they care enough to try to pretend like the Constitution means anything to them.
