When currencies crash, the people seek stable currency ($) until their government disallows this practice.

Brazillian real
swiss franc
German mark if they bring those back...
Real estate and lead.
To wit: food & timber resources, and the means to protect them.
Gold is only useful for holding value thru to the other side of the event, if you have enough to spare getting there.
