Blunt questions DOL media policy
Washington Examiner ^ | May 10, 2012 | Mark Tapscott

"Does DOL believe that the new policy is consistent with the First Amendment? What precedents exist for forcing journalists to utilize government-owned systems and networks to report the news," Sen. Roy Blunt, R-MO, asked Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis in a letter today.

DOL claims these changes are to tighten security. If private companies have software installed on govt. computers, that could be a problem, if that software could run at a high privelege. But maybe this govt. system is so ancient that they can't make security changes, so they have to redo everything. The govt. refuses to comment, and the article is skimpy on details.

On the other hand, the govt. might be using security as an excuse to remove software that would contradict any attempt to fudge the numbers in Obama's favor.

Who understands how this really works????

What is really going on here? I would expect Hilda Solis to do as much partisan mischief as possible.

The Department of Labor reports (unemployment numbers, etc) are released to pre-registered reporters in a locked room 30 minutes prior to public release of the reports, so that they have a chance to write a news article about the report for publication at the same time.

The standard for that room has been no phones, no pagers, no cameras, etc - basically no outside communication until the report has been released - so that no one gets an advantage in the market. Just a fifteen minute lead on a particularly important labor report could mean millions for the carefully positioned investment firm.

Only problem is: with reporters bringing in their own hardware, they could also be bringing in their own bugs - knowingly or unknowingly. While the only two known releases of the reports early were through DOL mistakes, it's possible that these laptops could become bugged with software that would broadcast the story the reporters are writing as they write it, and give someone a good advantage in the market.

It's just rather unlikely.

The security theory is that by using vetted computers with vetted software, the risks are minimized in having the report contents broadcast early.

Six of one, half dozen of another, really. It doesn't seem to be all that much of a reach to restrict all electronics from the closed room, including computers.

We're talking a half hour here - when you read a wire report about jobs numbers up or down, it came from reporters in these locked rooms who read the report early and wrote their report to be released as soon as the report is released to the public.

I am not rallying to defend a group against Dems that is in opposition to my most important issues allied with Dems against me just to support the much lesser issues I care about.

If you join with Dems to get O re-elected, then don't expect my support when they treat you like Serfs.

Same with Catholic Church and BC. If you join Dems to make us pay to support EVERY illegal's kid born here, then don't expect my support in defending you against the Dems on BC.

Sen. Blunt might be wrong. Sometimes a security issue is just a security issue. I don’t like or trust Hilda Solis, but I doubt that the voters could be convinced that they have jobs when they really don’t, no matter what the DOL and the media do.
