Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, have endorsed Deb Fischer, providing the state Senator’s struggling bid to succeed retiring Sen. Ben Nelson (D) an adrenaline shot six days before the GOP primary.
Fischer sought the former Alaska governor’s support early in her campaign in “a note,” according to the Fischer campaign press release. Often in the 2010 cycle, candidates were surprised to receive a Palin endorsement. The Palin endorsement proved to be an effective tool for obscure candidates to gain footing in competitive primaries.
“I am writing to you as both a fan of your strong, conservative principles and as a fellow female Republican,” Fischer wrote to Palin. “I have watched your career with respect as you take on tough issues, all while raising a family and serving your great state. Your career has inspired me and so many other female politicians who believe principles should be above politics.”
The Palins wrote back six days before the primary.
“We are happy to support you and have asked SarahPAC to send a financial contribution to your campaign,” they wrote. “Good luck next Tuesday — the Palins are in your corner.”
The endorsement is an enormous boost to what had previously been an also-ran campaign. Fischer has struggled mightily for both attention and campaign funds in a field of three. Her GOP opponents include state Attorney General Jon Bruning, widely considered the frontrunner, and state Treasurer Don Stenberg, who has benefited from the support of the likes of the Club for Growth and Sen. Too bad she couldn't have given her unqualified endorsement to Newt or one of the others. Now, we're stuck with Romney. Thanks, Sarah, for nothing.
I'm not outofstyle, but here's a fact: Palin could have endorsed Newt nationwide, and gone and toured with him. It would have given him the nomination, I believe. Instead, she demurred. I question her courage.
Perhaps you should play the lottery? After all, with your clairvoyant skills and ability to read minds you should be able to hit the numbers pretty easily.
Retreads can change their names, but they can never change their obnoxious personalities that got them banned in the first place.
Has it ever occurred to you that she wasn't asked?
My big fear is that Stenberg & Fischer will split the conservative vote allowing Jon Bruning to pick up an undeserved victory. And that’s a shame since I think Bruning has the potential to become an entrenched CINO/RINO. And that shouldn’t happen in Nebraska.
Why do we conservatives insist upon doing this over & over? It’s a little depressing.

Only this: we struggled over the summer of 2010 in Delaware to get RINO Mike Castle out of government. We had no money & no press. We lobbied hard to get Sarah to endorse Christine O'Donnell all Summer and she kept her distance. One by one, Laura Ingraham endorsed, Tammy Bruce did, Michele Malkin did & Jim Demint did. But it was not until a couple of days before the primary, after two major polls showed Christine O'Donnell finally pulling out in the polls, and we on the ground knew that the race was won, that Sarah gave her late endorsement. To me it seemed that she jumped on the bandwagon and withheld her support when we really could have used it. I have never felt the same about her since then. Sorry. I know that there is a great deal of emotion where Sarah is concerned.
There are two dynamics in this primary. The conservative PACS supporting Don Stenberg have run anti-Bruning ads rather than pro-Stenberg. More importantly, Fischer is running in part as a regional candidate, a farmer and rancher of rural Nebraska opposed by big city lawyers. In a multi-candidate primary, such a pitch is very feasible.
Well, back in 2010 it made perfect sense to endorse as many women for Governor and Senate as possible in anticipation of all of them then endorsing her for President.
She was a former woman Governor, and beyond question the most famous female political figure in the party, so was it really a surprise that she’d be endorsing other women candidates?
In fact, you could say it was actually a selfless move and the wrong move politically. The more women in the party the less important and less powerful she is. Back in 2008 she was the only pro-life woman in either a Governorship or in the Senate, so when McCain needed a female VP she was the only possibility. However, since then she’s endorsed and supported Ayotte in NH, Haley in SC, Martinez in NM, Fallin in NM, Brewer in AZ. That’s 5 more prolife women. So, she’s only hurting her own cause by putting more competition out there.
If you’ll notice, you don’t really see Obama out there supporting other black guys, and he even helped to force Burris out in IL. He wants to make sure he’s the only black guy in the party. You never really saw Hillary out there supporting other dem women, either.
If she knew back in 2010 she wans’t going ot run for President then it’s a bit more curious. But at the time, building up a cadre of women Governors and Senators who could be counted on for support down the road was a perfectly logical move. Especially in a key conservative and GOP state like GA that votes on Super Tuesday. She’d have had Haley in SC and Handel in GA both in her corner and that’d be a pretty good duo to have and it would have put her in a very advantageous position.
As I recall, that Deal-Handel primary ended up being decided by less than 1/2 of 1% so it was very close.
I think a lot of that is more about strategy and timing.
You want an endorsement to have the biggest impact possible. If she had endorsed O’Donnell earlier in the summer by the time of the vote in September it would have been old news. Instead, she endorsed her a few days before the vote and it was a big boost and provided a lot of late momentum. And again, part of that was probably selfish as well. She sensed COD had a great shot of winning and didn’t want to miss out on sharing in the glory. And supporting another woman candidate would only add to the potential roster of support for her down the road.
Endorsements can often be more effective the closer we get to the actual vote. If it’s too early they become diluted and fade over time.
Look here in NE. Stenberg got a lot of endorsements a while back and they’re all old news by now. No impact. But her endorsement of Fischer was at the just right time and came it would be most effective in actually moving the numbers. It gave Fischer momentum or “mom”-entum as the case may be, and based on the #s and recent polls it appears to have had a real impact.
So I think in a lot of cases the decision of when to endorse is more strategic and based on larger considerations.
It’s why to be honest I was a bit confused that she endorsed Cruz so early. I’d have thought it would have been better to wait until about a week or so out and then endorse instead of closer to 3 weeks out. The only thing I can think of is Cruz and his people saw they were in danger of not even making the runoff and felt they needed it now.
Don't care about spelling right - I care about who Palin endorses.

I understand that you can’t think for yourself, fantasize about Sarah Palin, and desperately need her to think for you, but that doesn’t change the reality that I don’t have a dog in the fight because I don’t live in Nebraska.
