PRINCETON, NJ -- Fifty percent of Americans believe same-sex marriages should be recognized by law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages -- down slightly from 53% last year, but marking only the second time in Gallup's history of tracking this question that at least half of Americans have supported legal same-sex marriage. Forty-eight percent say such marriages should not be legal.
These results -- based on Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs poll, conducted May 3-6 -- come at a time when Vice President Joe Biden's remarks on "Meet the Press" Sunday have at least temporarily brought the issue of same-sex marriage back into the news spotlight. Biden said he was "absolutely comfortable" with the idea that same-sex couples and heterosexual couples are "entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties." President Obama, however, has stopped short of saying that he favors legalizing same-sex marriage.
Last's year's Values and Beliefs survey marked the first time in Gallup's history of tracking this issue that a majority favored legalization. Prior to last year, the highest level of support had been 46%, measured in 2007. In 1996, when Gallup first asked the question, 27% supported it, while 68% were opposed.
The issue of same-sex marriage sharply divides the American public along political and religious lines. Almost two-thirds of Democrats support legalizing it, compared with 57% of independents and 22% of Republicans.

If Libs said pedophilia was okay, moderate/indepdendents would also approve. .They can’t think for themselves.

Explain why amendment 1 will pass
Why are politicians constantly bringing up issues that divide the country? Are they working to divide us all on purpose?

I don’t trust these polls. Kinda like the unemployment numbers.
20 years from now fifty percent of Americans will believe polygamus marriages should be recognized by law as valid.
20 years after that fifty percent of Americans will believe adult/child marriages should be recognized by law as valid.
And 20 years after that fifty percent of Americans will believe human/animal marriages should be recognized by law as valid.
Incredible when one thinks about the fact that about 80% of America claim to be Christian.
Is this a sign the Left has made extensive progress perverting our core beliefs?
Or is it just another attack by the Progressive media?
Really...how come every time a state holds a vote, they vote against it?
The Pro Family-Anti Gay Movement must use all and any means to reverse this trend of the acceptance of gay marriage.
That means we need to work harder to expose the homosexual agenda and expose the homos in our communities, schools and workplaces.
I think half of America doesn’t know what marriage is.
You are right.
The first goal of the gay activists was to institutionalize monogamous same-sex marriage. Then, once the legality of monogamous homosexual marriage is established, they then plan to move on to “ployamory” and polygamy.
Their eventual goal is to have group marriages, with any number of partners, any gender of partners, any sex-change status of partners, all legally recognized as marriage.
If anybody objects, they will be painted as bigoted homophobic and all the rest, just as those who object to monogamous homosexual marriage are criticized today.
The gay groups consider much of straight society to be unenlightened, ignorant, uneducated about all of these matters. In fact, they consider many to be “heteronormative”, because so many use the concept of monogamous opposite sex marriage as some “normal” benchmark of a family. The gay groups object to heteronormative thinking, because of how “bigoted and homophobic” such thinking is.
I guess we’re supposed to think outside the box on this one, to be a good liberal.
Funny, everytime it is put to a vote of the people, biblical marriage wins.
Let’s watch North Carolina tonight, shall we? After all, Barack Hussein Obama (mmm mmm mmm) won that state—so everyone KNOWS they’ll adopt his point of view on gay marriage.
And how can good liberals hold their convention in a bigoted state which rejects homosexual marriage?
Are we supposed to boycott states which have voted down homosexual marriage?
Probably not, because North Carolina would be the 32nd state to take that action. It’s got to be hard to boycott most of the country to make a political statement.
Alternative headline: support for legalizing gay marriage has declined.
RE: Alternative headline: support for legalizing gay marriage has declined.
Are you telling us that support for legalizing gay marriage used to be HIGHER than half before?
