Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can affect both animals and humans. Symptoms may include decreased appetite, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Pets and people who carry the disease can infect others, so if you or your pet are experiencing symptoms and you have purchased and used the affected dog food, take all due precaution and see a doctor and/or veterinarian. You can prevent spread of the disease by washing your hands thoroughly and following physician instructions.
If you have purchased one of the recalled pet foods, you should immediately stop feeding it to your animals, and contact the place you purchased the pet food from - refunds may be available. For complete information, visit the Diamond Pet Foods recall page, the Costco pet product recall pages, the Natural Balance recall page, the Wellness recall page, the Canidae recall page, or the FDA's recall page, which has information on multiple brands in the Animal Health section. The CDC also has information on documented salmonella contamination.
Thanks. How’s your pooch now? Feeling better I hope?
That’s interesting that both don’t show symptoms!
I wish you the best tomorrow with the tests..
I love my dog, and wouldn’t give it to him tainted food, but I was just thinking. I have seen the neighbors dog across the street eat 3 week old road kill, and not miss a beat. Gotta wonder how much overkill there is with this.
There are freeze-dried or dehydrated options for travel for those feeding raw. Check Bravo’s or Honest Kitchen or one of those that specialize in raw food. Hope that helps!
Thanks! I’ll look into that.
Hope it helps! Just google “raw freeze-dried” or “raw dehydrated”
Canidae used to be made in CA, I believe. Several years ago they outgrew their production and switched part of it to the Diamond Plant.
I bought a 44 pound bag of Canidae on Friday - by Sunday the first bowl still sat untouched. It is a February use by date and even though the early reports said only use by 1/31 recall, I put it all back in the bag to return it.
I bought Royal Canin Sunday and he loves it, although I don't think it is a high quality food. Still looking, but will not buy anything packaged by Diamond.
The last bag of Canidae gave him foul smelling gas - was ready to vet him although acidophylus daily cleared it up. I suspect now that it was also a bad bag of Canidae.
Open to suggestions of a high quality food for a five year old German Shepherd. Can't do raw.
Not sure where you live Abby, but my dog does well with Harmony Farms dry. I think it’s only available in the Upstate NY / NW PA area? We discovered it while on vacation one year in Erie, PA. We ran out of Canidae and picked up a bag at a Wegman’s market. Josh loves it.
We live about 100 mi. from Erie so we started buying it on Amazon (free shipping) and mixing it with the Canidae. Now Amazon sells it through one of it’s partners with no free shipping. So, we’re in the same boat as you.
Freeper Salamander suggested Halo which looks interesting and it’s available at Petco.
I saw a post today that Canidae is opening their own facility in Texas this month? Might give them another chance down the road.
Good luck.
