The Washington Post Co. reported its first-quarter earnings on Friday, and the news coming out of the newspaper division was mostly grim. The unit lost $22.6 million in the quarter, with revenue down 8% and revenue from print advertising specifically falling 17%.
Meanwhile, the Post just reported one of the biggest circulation drops of any major newspaper with the lucrative Sunday edition selling 5.2% fewer copies and the daily edition skidding almost 10%. Oh, and newsroom leaders are so distressed about the way the business decline is affecting them, they held a secret meeting with the papers president, Steve Hills without inviting executive editor Marcus Brauchli.
Now, are you ready for the really bad news?
Check out the chart below from AppData.com. It shows the number of monthly average users (MAU) of the Washington Post Social Reader, an app that encourages Facebook users to read and recommend articles from the Posts website.

This newspaper is only in business now because they were supported by profits from Kaplan University.
Fixed, no charge.
Like the saying goes, “you reap what you sow!”
“I do not like Brauchli. And I haven't liked him since I was a little kid and my mother made me work for him. And I'm President of the United States and I'm not going to invite any more Brauchli.”

Does anyone know the year(s) of when the “Pravda On The Potomac” had their largest circulation numbers?
Newspapers are dead.
Long live the internet, free (mostly) from liberal bias!
I made quite a bit of money from the Washington Post at one time. However, I’m glad I cut my financial ties and divested myself of all my WaPo holdings.
I delivered my last morning paper in 1960, at the age of 13, after having earned $20-$25 per week for three years.
Hey, don’t sneer; that’s BIG MONEY for a kid! (especially in 1958-60)
;-)
[I wonder if my leaving their employ had anything to do with their descent into terminal liberalism? Maybe I could have saved them, if only I’d tried harder to teach them the error of their ways..... NAAAAA!]
“Does anyone know the year(s) of when the Pravda On The Potomac had their largest circulation numbers?”
No, but I’d assume ‘72-’74 when Watergate was brewing and there wasn’t ANY alternative media.
LOLOLOLOL @ Pravda On The Potomac
Comcast will buy it, and the new entity will be called Compost
Great news - it will not be missed when it will finally goes to newspaper heaven or rather rag hell.
There are still a lot of Americans living in this country. Communism doesn’t sell with Americans.
That's the thing, there are still a lot of Americans living in this country. I guess that's a big problem for BO.
Newspaper . . . isn't that one of them paper iPad thingies that had all them coupons?
“Socialism kills!”
Seems to apply to newspapers as well as nations.
When Ayers’ crew knocks off 25 mil, there’ll be less. Just don’t read “Atlas Shrugged” on the way to the railcar and think you’re making a difference. Not to you, just in general.
I think it had something to do with systematic slaughter of trees!
It’s been a very long time since I bought a newspaper.
Trees? I thought they were made out of dinosaurs.
