Goober Pyle
Was he related to Gomer Pyle (on the show)?

May he rest in peace. Extraordinary man. Once saw him take apart a complete automobile and rebuild it in the Sheriff’s office.

How sad. The last great Cary Grant imitator is gone.

Always got a kick out of seeing him in his pre-Goober roles, when he’d be in little bit parts, usually playing something like a strongarm henchman to some gangster or outlaw. It’s not listed at Imdb.com, but I seem to recall him in an episode of “The New Loretta Young Show,” in which he played a seedy character offering a marijuana cigarette to a young girl at a Greenwich Village coffeehouse!

Anyway, I didn’t initially care too much for the Goober character, but he became better as the years went on, especially by the time of “Mayberry RFD.” I was always a fan of “The Andy Griffith Show,” and watched it regularly in reruns for decades, up until three years ago, when Griffith started shilling for Obamacare. I’ve not watched an episode since.

In a somewhat related story, Jim Nabors, who has sung “Back Home Again in Indiana” during pre-race ceremonies at the Indy 500 since 1972, will not be singing this year due to scheduled heart surgery.

I’m pretty sure his Mayberry name was Goober Beasley; he was Gomer Pyle’s cousin. (I like to visit Mayberry a LOT!)

When we moved to Panama City, FL in 1951, I was 4 years old. I remember Andy Griffith appeared somewhere at the Dixie Sherman Hotel doing some of his comic routines.

I didn’t get to see him but I remember the radio played a few of them. I still remember one called: “What is was, was football” or something like that. It was pretty funny. He was just getting to be known at the time.

I always liked his acting. The roll of Goober obviously was his calling. He was an actor in an era network TV was fit for family viewing.

Maybe 10 years ago, I bought Andy Griffith’s personal binoculars off ebay. They came with a certificate of authenticity and I noticed a very old sticker giving his and his wife’s name and address in Beverly Hills or Hollywood. I got it on ebay from a pawn shop in Las Vegas.

I think this actually came from the time he was moving to North Carolina from California. There was a note that they came from a roll top desk.

I was thinking they might become more valuable after he died but the old rascal just keeps on living.

I always knew him as “Goober”. I remember being surprised when we cycled through the reruns again and found out that he was Gomer’s brother. (I was still only in high school or so, but I’d been walking Andy Griffith reruns for years by that point.)

Not sure if it’s been posted as a thread. Doug Dillard a Bluegrass Banjo player formerly of The Dillards aka one of The Darling Brothers on Andy Griffin Show died Wednesday of a lung infection at age 75.
