Paul Clement, who served as U.S. solicitor general under President George W. Bush and is now a lawyer in private practice, is the favorite of many conservatives. Clement argued last month for the Supreme Court to strike down Obama's 2010 healthcare law, and he is defending laws that ban same-sex marriage and that target illegal immigrants. Clement, 45, would be "at the top of any short list right now," said Curt Levey, executive director of the Committee for Justice, a group that advocates for conservative nominees.
Asked about Clement, Mary Ann Glendon, a co-chairwoman of Romney's Justice Advisory Committee, voiced "unbounded admiration" for him. "He's the type of person who fits the mold that the governor has pledged to look for," Glendon said, adding that "it's much too soon to speculate about names."
Mentioned as often as Clement is Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Kavanaugh, 47, sits on a court that produced four sitting justices. He has deep roots in Washington, D.C., having worked in the Bush White House and assisted in the 1990s investigation that nearly led to President Bill Clinton's ouster. Kavanaugh is known for elaborate opinions such as a 65-page dissent he wrote in November exploring how an 1867 tax law barred courts from considering Obama's healthcare law until 2015.
A third possibility, Judge Diane Sykes, is often mentioned as a likely Romney nominee if the next person to leave the Supreme Court is Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the court's senior woman justice. Ginsburg has survived cancer twice. Sykes, 54, was appointed to a Chicago-based U.S. appeals court in 2004, overcoming Democratic criticism of her record in abortion-related cases.

If Romney does become President, I expect he’ll be cautious about his choice, depending heavily on the political climate.
Interestingly, two of the three top possibilities are from Wisconsin.
Since the majority of his appointments as governor where liberal, why would he be different as prez (yea before you say , sure the Repubs in the senate would block liberals- ha ha & ha)
I’m glad to see Estrada mentioned. That would be a good choice.
Also Clement, he seems to be really top-notch.
And what about that woman we used to hear about, Janice Rogers Brown? Something like that. She’s not in the article, but I thought I saw her mentioned somewhere the other day, I think she’s on the bench somewhere still.
I just hope it is not Obama making these next few choices.
Pure Romney Republican manipulation.
Meh.
Can anyone name a single conservative that Mitt Romney named to the courts in Massachusetts?
Just to put things into perspective, back when we saw lists of George W. Bush’s potential court picks floating around in 2000, Harriet Myers wasn’t on any of them.
In other words, a list of “good judges” floated by the Party to try to reassure the base about a bad GOP candidate doesn’t mean a whole lot.
I could see Mitty looking out for his legacy and going down in the record books for being the first to appoint an openly homosexual judge.
She’s on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. The DemocRATS would really put up a fight on her, especially if a liberal judge were to retire.
We need to gain as many U.S. Senate seats as possible.
I am thinking for the two possible picks:
1. Miquel Estrada
2. Mark Levin
“......a list of good judges floated by the Party to try to reassure the base about a bad GOP candidate doesnt mean a whole lot. “
You nailed THAT.
Floating outright lies, false narratives and to kill Romney’s record of severe socialism is the name of his game. What else has he?
Romney the Republican was first to supply the individual mandate, in MA.
Romney the Republican was first to inflict suppression of religious liberty on Catholic institutions, in MA.
Romney the Republican was first........Planned Parenthood, Pro Abortion representatives, liberal judges, DEBT....., before there WAS a Brack Obama.
More compromise, anyone?
VOTE FOR ROMNEY, THE OBAMA TEMPLATE.
See where that takes us, with a RINO senate, and a built in liberal Democrat fan base already.
Chances are Obama would be stopped cold, but Romney would not. After all, he wears the (R).
No other candidate will do more to advance the conservative judicial movement than Governor Mitt Romney Governor Romney is committed to nominating judges who take their oath of office seriously and respect the rule of law in our nation. -Judge Robert Bork in his 2008 endorsement of Mitt Romney
delusional.
Romney has a record. Why should we ignore it?
His record shows he appoints leftist judges.
“Jeffrey Sutton, 51, joined a Cincinnati-based court after years in private practice and Ohio state government. Though long a favorite of conservatives, he wrote an opinion in June 2011 upholding the healthcare law that drew their disappointment.”
This one is automatically disqualified in my book!
“Chances are Obama would be stopped cold...”
Can we really count on that? Sotomayor might have been one thing, but I think Kagan was really a hack. Nobody stopped her, they’ve stopped some of his nominees, or made it clear they would be stopped.
And who knows, after Obama’s “last election” maybe the Republicans in the Senate would develop stronger spines, but who knows?
Cass Sunstein, anyone? Eric Holder?
You're delusional. obama won't be stopped cold as long as linsey graham and orin"The Chicken Man" hatch are still wasting oxygen.
>> “ Can we really count on that? Sotomayor might have been one thing, but I think Kagan was really a hack. Nobody stopped her, theyve stopped some of his nominees, or made it clear they would be stopped. “ <<
What you say is also true, but with no limits placed on moving the Party to the Left, the RINO Establishment, under a Romney presidency, will be freed up to indulge their own socialist traits, and strengthen their clear agenda to move the Republican Party to the left. They will vote FOR everything he shovels out, where as, Obama could offer up the same thing (and has), they would kill it dead.
I am thinking that if the RINO’s are so desperate to secure their own power and survival, that in a second term of Obamao, they would be forced to step back and fight tooth and nail everything Obama offered up.
Romney is a socialist with a proclivity toward the VERY same legislation Obama has moved forward that we call Marxist.
I have no answers, first of all, for myself, but continue to believe there is an “out” somewhere. I will have to vote “other” for the presidency, and trust God mightily for the rest, and bear the consequences.
God be with us.
I am not delusional.
The worst of Romney and Obama now sits in the Supreme Court of the United States to be decided.
The kind of gains these two posers (Romney & Obama) advanced on Americans first in MA, then to Congress, was a cram down, without a single vote from the GOPE in the US senate, and will likely be held unconstitutional, certainly in whole, or in part.
The GOPE was seen by everyone, but you evidently, to oppose all of it when it was advanced by Obama. In the Senate, Republicans gave him NOT A SINGLE VOTE.
I repeat, NOT A SINGLE VOTE.
This crap was first Romney’s agenda. It’s HIS RECORD, for crying out loud, in MA.
The GOPE will vote for every bit of it in the future, under a Romney White House.
Wake up. The GOPE drug this skunk to the party for a REASON.
"Because in Massachusetts, there exists a popularly-elected body known as the Governor's Council that has the sole power to review and approve judicial nominees. During Romney's tenure, 8 of the 9 seats were held by Democrats. In other words, he did not have the ability to appoint whomever he wanted. Of those he did appoint, the percentage of Republicans was much higher than the 1/9 support he had on the Governor's Council."
