Were Ronald Reagan in office today, some Republicans would "start looking for a 'real' conservative to challenge him in a primary," Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote in an op-ed published Saturday evening.
"What's important is our shared belief in the broad Republican principles of free enterprise and small government," he said in the op-ed published in the Los Angeles Times. "If we continue to fight one another without being willing to compromise, we will keep losing to big-government advocates."

"To succeed, Republicans need to embrace true Reaganism, and that means embracing the true Reagan, a brave and independent leader who believed in solutions and compromise."
This reminds me of a famous Reagan quote, posted on FR by Diddle E. Squat:
"When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn't like it.
"Compromise" was a dirty word to them and they wouldn't face the fact that we couldn't get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don't get it all, some said, don't take anything.

I think at this point Reagan would recognize that the GOP has been moderated into a coma and suggest that the moderates consider moderating the party that actually needs it.

Sure Arnold, like how he compromised with the Soviets. All of those people telling him to be a hard liner with them, but in the end it was his compromising that led to the defeat of the USSR. Right?

Reagan had a knack for compromising without caving, and he was always went in the right direction. Importantly, he actually DID get 80% of what he wanted in exchange for the occasional shot of cancerous Democrat compromise.
Reagan, at least, had lines in the sand. One of those lines in the sand was communist health care. Reagan would NEVER have compromised his way into liberal Romney’s communist health care, not in a million years.
This - coming from Mr. global warming who has unleashed a cadre of never-ending regulations in air-quality, transportation, city planning, health, land and water use that will control every detail of our lives. Arnold has no concept of individual freedom and small localized government.
The (R) deserves our hard earned labor and support and the (D) does not.

I have several times posted here that my view is that George W. Bush has been the best and most conservative president in my lifetime, as unlike Reagan G.W. Bush did NOT sign on to the biggest tax increase in US history up to that time, did NOT cut and run in the middle east, did NOT appoint any soft justices to the SCOTUS and did NOT sign an immigration amnesty bill.
Still I think what Schwarznegger is missing is that conservatives are tired of making deals and getting a bad deal. They would be less dogmatic if when they gave up 30% they were able to keep the 70%. Heck even if when they gave up 70% if they actually got to keep the 30%. Reagan’s amnesty bill was made in exchange for better border enforcement, but he got little there. His tax cuts were for spending cuts that never materialized. So some of the blame for polarization goes to Dims who have failed to live up to deals they agreed to.
Of course some of this is that today’s parliament can not bind a future one. So you must keep winning elections over and over and over. And this is where Schwarznegger is right in one sense. That a very few conservatives sat out in 2008 and way too much of the squishy middle of the GOP voted Obama gave us Justice Sotomayor and Justice Kagan, gave us Obama care, gave us cap and trade by bureaucratic fiat, etc.
If you want to reverse any of this, you have to get Obama out of there and elect a strong GOP majority in Congress. [If you want the status quo, then you can ignore the presidency.] You have to do it election after election even if from time to time a GOP president screws up and gives us Justice O’Connor.
Like the "compromise" that left us $361 billion in debt in this state.

Arnold caved completely. Bush caved 70%. The result was that largely Democrat policies were blamed on Republicans, and that took down the State of California, a Republican Congress and the Presidency.
RINOs suck. Got it?
Arnold did absolutely everything he could to keep down-ticket conservatives such as Tom McClintock from winning State-wide offices. How is that "big tent Republicanism"? He lied about budgets, he lied about government growth, he regulated his own base into leaving the State, and he fed his "bipartisan" corporate cronies (you know, the guys who pay for campaign consultants) until the State was in bankruptcy.

You seem to forget that in CA the Legislature has an overwhelming extremely ciberal Dem majority. I vaguly remember reading that Schwarzenegger vetoed about half the bills these extreme liberals sent up to him,but obviously he couldn’t veto everything.
Conservatives in CA should work on electing more Republicans to their state legislature.
