Depends on the tirbes in question, no? Some tribes were focused on agriculture and inhabited a fixed area. Some tribes were very nomadic. Some peaceful and some would make scare the crap out of a Conquistador. There is a big difference between, for example, the Zuni and the Comanche. One can no more lump together all American Indians any more than one can lump together all Europeans.

I don't think that mattered much to those Whites that killed men, women , and children and said things like “nits breed lice” and “the only good Indian is a dead Indian”. Hell , the Modoc war in N. Calif. started when some Warm Springs Indians were starving and killed a farmers beef to eat and the neighbors all got together to go “pay them back”. The first Indians they ran into were some peaceful Modocs. They killed them all because they were Indians and after all Indians stole their cow. Yes the tribes were different but to a White in those days, the only good indian was a dead Indian. Not so bad being Indian today, Hell, College professors and politicians are all claiming to be Indian.
