Boston Globe: Bad week may haunt Warren - Handling of controversy is roundly criticized
Boston Globe ^ | May 5, 2012 | Noah Bierman and Frank Phillips

Elizabeth Warren fumbled through her worst stretch as a Senate candidate this week, setting off a debate among strategists over whether the controversy over her claims to Native American ancestry would linger when the November election is closer.

The Warren campaign will not say when top advisers learned that she considered herself part-Native American, but it was an element of her biography that seemed to catch them off guard.

When news emerged last Friday that Harvard Law School had publicly touted Warren as a Native American professor in the Harvard Crimson in the 1990s, Warren advisers saw it as a story that would go away quickly.

But the story took added dimension when it was revealed that Warren had listed herself as a minority in a major legal directory.

The fallout and her unsteady response to it subjected the rookie Democratic Senate candidate to tough questions, an unflattering national glare, and a recognition from others that she had hit her first real stumble. The Washington Post’s political blog, The Fix, gave Warren the dubious honor “Worst Week in Washington."

“I have yet to run into anyone in politics who believes that this was handled well at all," said Jennifer Duffy, a senior editor at The Cook Political Report who tracks Senate races around the country. “The explanations have left enormous room for doubt and speculation."

Right: Little Chief Running Mouth dress-um in native garb after her step-um in heap deep doo doo!

For someone who was given a teaching position at an Ivy League college, she has a very un-Ivy League background.

I remember reading many articles mocking Sarah Palin's educational background, because she changed colleges several times , trying to work her education schedule in with her family life. Looks like Elizabeth took the same path. However, as expected, Warren is lionized and her background un-analyzed while Palin’s academics get the fine tooth comb treatment.

So the question of gaming the system must be looked at and the question asked, how the heck does one get such a prestigious teaching assignment with a law background that was achieved at second level law schools? Looks like it may have to do with Warren marring a Harvard academic, or claiming a Native American background, or perhaps both.

Of course, Ms. Warren was "allowed" to check the Native-American box. Just more ammo for those of us who see how nonsensical the whole affirmative action scenario is.

A family friend was Early Wynn, major league Hall of Famer, a pitcher with a blazing fast ball and an effective knuckleball.

He was an affable, interesting guy who loved to tell stories. He was part Indian descent, drank his whiskey neat, and liked to reply when asked that his folks "took a chance on an Indian blanket" and that's how he got his name, "Early".

After finishing his pitching career he did color on Chicago White Sox radio. He retired for fishing and such in Venice, about two hours south of where I live on Florida's Gulf Coast. I heard he was hurt when his boat caught fire at the dock and this may or may not have hastened his death in 1999.

It looks like a worthy background, if true. Some people grow too full of themselves.

There is nothing wrong with her background. It’s just not Harvard Professor material

I watched Early nail his 300th win while sitting in the stands in Kansas City. He pitched just enough to get the victory and then was pulled off the mound. I remember the event fairly well, although I was a young pup at the time. And until now, I wondered how he got his nickname.

Actually, "Early" was his real name. His nickname during his baseball career was "Gus", although broadcasters and sportswriters usually referred to him by his given first name.
