Poll: Lugar trails Mourdock by 10 points
The Hill ^ | May 4, 2012 | Cameron Joseph

Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) is 10 points behind his primary opponent, according to a new nonpartisan poll, making it highly unlikely he'll win Tuesday's contest.

Lugar trails Indiana state Treasurer Richard Mourdock (R) 48 percent to 38, according to a poll released Friday from Howey Politics Indiana and DePauw University. That is Mourdock's largest lead in any poll conducted of the race, including those by groups backing him.

This is the latest — and biggest — bad sign for the six-term incumbent: The poll is considered the most accurate in the state. Lugar already has seen a major outside group pull funding from his campaign, another sign that even allies of Lugar don't think he can be saved at this point.

In their previous poll, conducted in late March, Lugar held a seven-point edge. Since then, outside groups have spent heavily on television for both candidates — and the attacks on Lugar seem to be sticking better.

The live-caller poll of 700 likely Republican primary voters was conducted on April 30 and May 1 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percent.

Remember that there will be huge numbers of “late count” ballots turning up in Gary and Indy...all of them marked “Lugar.”

All polls are really meaningless.

Now Greg Garrison will not be able to complain that Luger won’t appear on his show and answer a few softball questions.

Rush just said that Lugar is reaching out to Democrats and Independents to cross the aisle and vote for him to save his seat. Truly pathetic.

“Rush just said that Lugar is reaching out to Democrats and Independents to cross the aisle and vote for him to save his seat.”

He sure is...
I’m looking at the mailer, RIGHT NOW, explaining that Indiana doesn’t require PArty Affiliation, and that Democrats can vote for him.

“Obamacare supporting Donnelly”

You mean “I ran against it, even though I voted FOR IT!” Joe Donnelly?

I really hope Mourdock can beat out Obamacare supporting Donnelly!

As I said in another thread, Donnelly barely managed to win congressional reelection in 2010. I really don't think he'll be a factor once Mourdock takes out Lugar.

Here’s what I’m thinking so tell me what I’m missing:

Wouldn’t the Dems prefer a Donnelly/Mourdock matchup than Donnelly/Lugar? Thinking like a Dem (ouch!), I’d like my odds against Mourdock much better. For the life of me, I can’t see the advantage of helping Lugar.

This is the happiest Snooby has been since he learned he didn't have to visit Bark Obama.

Oddly enough, Indiana does, in fact, require a primary voter to declare party affiliation. Upon entering the polling place (and providing a valid photo ID, by the way), a Hoosier voter must request either a Democrat or Republican ballot. While a voter is free to switch party affiliation every election, if a Democrat intends to vote for Lugar, he won’t be able to vote in any Democrat primary contests.

Really? I think he is pretty good. I just heard him today on the Hugh Hewitt show and he seems like one of the more eloquent spokesmen for conservatives. My congressman is Henry Waxman, so Campbell is Jesus in comparison..
