Mao was a late-comer. "Forward" has been a commie slogan for a very long time.

Here's Trotsky from 1917.

Even that wasn't the first. On January 4, 1905, the first issue of the Bolshevik newspaper Vperyod (Forward) appeared.

Italian Socialists were using it in 1896.

The German socialists' Vorwärts[Forward], started in 1891, had Engels writing for them.
