This reminds me of the article where a guy freaked out when he found a .22 bullet on the ground.

It reminds me of the time I was traveling along a boulevard in a suburb of Denver and a cop steps out from behind a fence about 30 yards ahead, takes a shooter’s stance and aims a speed gun at me (and other traffic). Going 45 mph (the legal speed) and seeing a figure in dark clothes step out and take aim caused me to momentarily consider locking up my brakes and taking evasive action. I’m glad I wasn’t too tired from a day’s construction work because I had about one second to process what I was seeing and make a decision.

In all fairness, he was probably looking over a fence, and aimed this device towards the meter.
At a distance, this just might possibly look like a weapon of some sort, I suppose. Maybe.

Not enough details to compare and contrast but in the link you posted, the worker was clearly trespassing and had to even climb a fence to do so. The homeowner wasn’t charged, rightfully so.
So if the worker in the OP knocked on the door, got no answer then trespassed on private property then it’s similar. If not, nice strawman...

Utility worker has a utility easement to enter for maintenance. He wasn’t trespassing.

The way semiautomatic rifles have been selling, you’d think everyone in New Jersey would have several of ‘em. Apparently, they think it’s a long way to the next wall or tree. Could solve one national problem, if they all get very excited at once, though (joke). City slickers, get shotguns and/or pistols for self-defense—not long range varmint rifles. Or waste your money...or whatever.

I’ve seen that picture of Al 1000 times and just noticed that gun isn’t loaded. Could be one in the pipe, but definitely no magazine.

Kinda funny. Last Thursday, I was driving home and in my neighborhood, a couple of guys were walking down the sidewalk, one with a scoped rifle slung over his shoulder. no big deal.

Utility worker has a utility easement to enter for maintenance.Absolutely correct!
You should have seen the reactions I got when I was a inspector for Puget Power back in the early nineties walking through business and communities around Seattle!
The heat reader I carried looked like an Uzi with a fore and rear grip and a scope on top... many, many calls to police! Once they checked us out (more than once!) all they did was tell not to point it anyone...LOL!
