Cerro Gordo County, IA - Local law enforcement is making an effort to keep ammunition out of the wrong hands.
On Saturday, Cerro Gordo County hosted an ammunition collection day. Folks are encouraged to drop off their unused, unwanted or expired ammunition.
Officers said not only will this help keep the ammunition out of the wrong hands, but it will also help keep your home safe.
"It's very explosive, so if there is fire in your house it can go off and then we're putting our friends at the fire department and our neighbors at risk," said Officer David Studder with the Mason City Police Department.
The collection day wrapped up Saturday evening, but officers said folks are welcome to drop off their old ammunition at any time, and they will dispose of it for you.
Expired ammo????
Yes, ammo can go bad, but I have shot tons of 60 year old ammo.
Keep it dry and it’ll last decades.

When my Grandmother's husband (not Grandpa) passed away, she was going to clear out his liquor cabinet. "Just junk it all", she said.
Dad and I got in the car and drove most of a night to rescue it. It was 1000's of dollars in (mostly) single-malt, and high-end blended scotch. Easily enough to stock a bar, and it kept us in high-tension booze for years.
The real prize was most of a case of turn-of-the century Napoleon Brandy. I literally fished it out of the trash. She was throwing it away "Because it was Old".
So....I can see where there'd be a call for a program like this. Lots of widows cleaning out their husband's gun collections, and such.

Yes, there are so many fatalities from spontaneous ammunition explosions it has become a national emergency!

Older widows throw away fortunes every day,I am sure.
An ex-sister-in-law also “cleaned up” her grandmother’s house and threw out all that “old stuff”;old stuff was a small fortune in Depression glass and flatware plus who knows what else!It all went to Rumpke Mountain (landfill).
On the other hand I have met men who salivate over getting their hands on valuable items for scrap metal;and they truly will simply scrap antigue and collectibles for pennies on the dollar because they are ignorant and arrogant.
The alarmist police officer is just carrying out the directives to confiscate as much of the citizens’ ability to defend themselves as possible.
All too many women are actually glad to disarm their family out of irrational fears;women oddly place their trust in the government.
Got a few hundred bucks in scrap value, but the actual value was near priceless.
Greed makes foolish people do foolish things. At least in my Gram's case, she was a teetotaler who placed no value at all on what she was getting rid of. It wasn't like she just was trying to turn a quick buck.

Many years ago the NRA did tests of cooking off boxed ammo. They found that boxed ammo will pop but did not have enough velocity to endanger firefighters.
Ammo cooking off in a rifle chamber is dangerous as it is enclosed.
And since when did ammo come with an expiration date! I’m still shooting ammo I bought 42 years ago, and a friend of mine was shooting WWII vintage Russian ammo in his Tokarev pistol.

For sure, I bet there’s way more people stocking up than turning in. I’ve been chasing all the factory over run / cosmetic seconds online. Just knowing my grandkids will have ammo when the caribou show up, rather than not being able to afford it due to taxes & controls far outweighs any safety fears for this guy.

That`s why we are getting rid of all the ammunition {except for 6 bullets per cop] in the Police Station and blowing it up at the dump.

This is about as dumb as a rationale as I’ve ever heard...what if your cat is playing with a round and hits the primer with it’s claw? Oh my! The sky is falling!
Yeah...and if you have a fire in your house, that gas line ain’t gonna be acting too nice either...sheesh!
