APRIL 27, 2012 12:00 A.M. Carter Redux? Maybe Not, Say The Demographics. By Mona Charen
Every new datum on economic stagnation such as Thursdays Labor Department announcement that unemployment claims remain at a three-month high increases the temptation to compare the 2012 presidential race to that of 1980.
Both contests feature a Democratic incumbent elected on a surge of high hopes who must face the voters after four years of disappointment. In both cases, the economy is a drag on the president.
In both cases, the incumbent has attempted to demonize his opposition in order to avoid running on his record. In both cases the challenger was regarded, at first, as easy to defeat.
Its seductive to believe that 2012 will turn out the way 1980 did, with voters concluding that the challenger was not the ogre the president warned of, seeing him instead as the more presidential of the two.
It may happen. But the Romney campaign and those who wish it well have to grapple with the fact that the country has changed in the past 32 years in ways that dont advantage Republicans.

I just listened to some hack. It was all Russian coming through my speakers. It sounded like attitude adjustments.
oh they pay taxes. Just need to show them where.
Gas, food, beer, licka(as Moochelle pronounces it), when dey Babies’(notice clever position of the apostrophe signifying more than one baby) mama needs her “her”(spelled hair) and nails did, she is paying taxes.
I mean not with their money but the money they get for “benefits” on that magic card that they buy stuff with. that stuff gets taxed. Sometimes at the local level but they are paying taxes even when they are spending other peoples’ money.
We just have to show them that they are getting taxed on “their” money(which is actually redirected income from us to them)
Probably got lost in the “translation”. Proportionaly it is probably a pretty high tax on the lower income folks if/when they buy booze, cigarettes, get their nails done, etc.
The trick will be to have them concerned about the taxes when they are spending other people’s money (in the form of their welfare checks).
HOWEVER, I would think that the majority of folks that don’t pay income taxes are still above the level for collecting welfare. And could be educated on the taxes for these items. However, as history has shown, it is probably impossible to educate them on the increase in consumer prices due to regulations and taxes imposed on those rich greedy companies.
From May, 2011: “That’s 14.7% of all Americans on food stamps. The average monthly amount? $133.80.”
National Review “jumped the shark”. Oh, all 50% prefer to live on food stamps in near poverty. The tax rates will not decide this election.
Flame me, but the last year or so of Carter was more conservative than anything post 1982.
Obama is planning for race riots which only he can calm.
I’ve notice Hollywood public service announcements about child hunger. There is no child hunger in America; but, Obama is going to bring it to us. That’s another of his plans.
Too bad the GOP has no intention of nominating another Reagan. Instead we are getting Obama without the tan.
Never underestimate the GOP’s ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
You got that right. Obama is about as popular as a cold sore and we still have a pretty good chance of his re-election.
Makes one wonder where the GOP true loyalities lie: With the country or with the system?
If you have to ask the question...
Great article. It gives a pragmatic assessment of the situation today compared to 1980, but at the same times gives reasons why we can be optimistic that Obama can be sent back to Chicago. I hope the Romney people read, and digest, this article. Thanks for the post Steelfish.
Only those with "skin in the game" should be permitted to vote.
Moochers will always vote AGAINST the candidate they believe will be the least genorous in passing out taxpayer money to them.
They will always vote FOR the candidate they believe will take the most from others and give it to them.
With more and more people living off government handouts their entire lives we are close to the point where no one but a socialist will ever be elected president again.
Ref. your Post #3: The Romney camp needs to get that info.
Too bad the GOP has no intention of nominating another Reagan.

Where are you going to find “another Reagan” these days? Where were all the “good Conservative candidates” this go ‘round? They didn’t have the balls to run and we ended up with the bunch of stooges we saw in the GOP Primary debacle.
Sarah Palin would be a great President but she’ll probably never put her family through the demonic attacks of the Liberals, the media and the Hollywood crowd again. God Bless Sarah Palin.
