Seems to be what they are up to.

Pass enough laws and regulations and none of us can avoid being a law breaker.

Won’t apply to our rulers though.

"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

"Atlas Shrugged," by Ayn Rand

Seeing people wandering from lane to lane with their eyes on their mobile device rather than the road really pisses me off, but giving the federal government the power to do anything about it will have dire consequences.

Government is the religion of the sociopath.

I'm not a smoker, but I told everyone on this board years ago who were all for outlawing smoking that if they got their way on that, sooner or later they would be coming for something YOU like.

This is a good predictor of obamacare, if it doesn't get tossed out, after they MAKE us buy their crappy insurance, they'll be coming around to MAKE us buy whatever their cronies (the ones giving them kickbacks and power) are selling...even a Chevy Volt.

Why don’t they ban switching radio stations while driving, while they’re at it?

I agree! Texting while walking should be outlawed too! But talking on your phone while driving? What about daydreaming while driving, planning dinner while driving and million other mind games. Sorry I can drive and talk at the same time.

Cell phones are not the problem - it is the behavior of those using them that is the problem. And no law in the world will correct the absence of manners and consideration for others.

LaHood is a total turd. I wish only bad things for him in the rest of his life. What a busy-body.

It’s different because if the person in the car that you are talking to is a federal official, and he/she sees you doing anything wrong while you are talking with them, the fed will take over driving for you - like they want to take over every other part of your life.

“Is the government going to put the FBI on motorcycles and in highway cruisers? “

Sounds like the plan to me.

Said it before, will say it again. The federal government has gotten very good at these types of things, I believe even more so since that day they failed miserably at one of the very few things that actually is the federal government’s responsibility.

Ya know, while they’re at it, I think that besides using cell phones, smoking, etc. while driving (which, of course, should ALL be banned to save us from ourselves), I think they’ve overlooked something equally dangerous.

I think the Feds need a law that prohibits breaking wind in a car either A) while driving, or B) with a child in the vehicle, whether moving or stationary. I mean, come on.....how much abuse should a child or a passenger of any age in a moving car have to take???

Write your Congressman.

“LaHood said, however, he was not as concerned about people who eat, apply makeup, or perform other distracting activities in cars because “not everyone does that.”

“But everyone has a cell phone and too many of us think it is OK to talk on our phones while we are driving,” he said at the summit, sponsored by insurance company USAA, the Texas Department of Transportation and Shriners Hospitals for Children.”

LaHood is a fuching moron. I swear to Zeus, I thought this was satire until I saw Rooters was reporting it. So, “everyone” has a cell phone, huh, Mr. Numbnuts? And somehow, because “everyone” has one, then that’s automatically a reason for a Federal law, no doubt enforced by the FBI on motorcycles? Well, first of all, Mr. totally out-of-touch Transportation Secretary, not everyone has a cell phone. And secondly, slaughtering people due to distraction from makeuping, eating, and other distractions is OK because “everyone” isn’t doing it? That makes me feel SO much better, jerk.

This bears repeating: “.. I'm so sick of seeing people yacking on their phones while driving worst than drunks.”

I'm against the feds getting involved in this, but I strongly support state measures to stop this insane epidemic!
Enforcement would be easier than getting drunks off the road because, as you pointed out trailhkr1, most phone using drivers are obvious to their surroundings—a cop could cruise up right next to them and easily see what they're doing!

I suggest that the word “state” be replaced by the word “province”...

How about replacing "state" or "province" with "Turkish village".

“So what’s next, I can’t talk to my passengers?”

As many of us were taught in Drivers’ Ed:
Yes, talking to your passengers can be a dangerous while driving; IT IS THE CONVERSATION ITSELF, AND THE MIND’S CONCENTRATION ON THAT SUBJECT RATHER THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT THAT MAKES IT DANGEROUS. But, at least with passengers in the same vehicle, there are extra pairs of eyes to help warn you of dangers outside. On the phone, you’re in your only little world!!!

LaHood is a fracking idiot-driving/walking/biking rules are for states to decide and enforce, not big brother-it is NTFB. And I’d be very happy if LaHood and his compadres are never welcomed to Texas again for any reason-let’s try holding people personally responsible for their own actions again-it worked just fine for centuries...
