New Fashion Wrinkle: Stylishly Hiding the Gun
NY Times ^ | April 23, 2012 | MATT RICHTEL

Woolrich, a 182-year-old clothing company, describes its new chino pants as an elegant and sturdy fashion statement, with a clean profile and fabric that provides comfort and flexibility.

And they are great for hiding a handgun.

The company has added a second pocket behind the traditional front pocket for a weapon. Or, for those who prefer to pack their gun in a holster, it can be tucked inside the stretchable waistband. The back pockets are also designed to help hide accessories, like a knife and a flashlight.

The chinos, which cost $65, are not for commandos, but rather, the company says, for the fashion-aware gun owner. And Woolrich has competition. Several clothing companies are following suit, building businesses around the sharp rise in people with permits to carry concealed weapons.

Their ranks swelled to around seven million last year from five million in 2008, partly because of changes to state laws on concealed handguns.

Shawn Thompson, 35, who works at an auto dealership in eastern Kentucky, bought two shirts last month from the Woolrich Elite Concealed Carry line. Both, he wrote on his blog, are a step up from more rugged gear.

“Most of the clothes I used in the past to hide my sidearm looked pretty sloppy and had my girlfriend complaining about my looks,” he wrote, adding in an interview, “I’m not James Bond or nothing, but these look pretty nice.”

The shirt has a barely discernible side slit with Velcro through which, he said, he can yank his Colt 1911 from his waistband holster. Depending on circumstances and mood, he might also carry a folding knife and, at night, a flashlight in a...

The anti’s are going to get more frantic in their vain attempt to stop the obvious truth: people have an unalienable right to protect themselves and that right implies they have a right to the means as well.

they make nice, small handbags with a secret compartment for the ladies who carry. I guess men will need a MAN PURSE to conceal during the warmer months. Winter time is no problem. A blazer and a chest holster (or whatever you call the one that is under your arm) works great.

If there is ever one thing I can never stress enough to the ladies I meet........DON"T KEEP YOUR GUN IN YOUR PURSE/HANDBAG!!!!! I don't care how cool or convenient it is. If someone rushes you and snatches your purse/handbag, they now have your money, ID, credit cards, OH YEAH, AND YOUR GUN!!!!

Guys, I don't care how super awesome you think it is, if you don't carry your money in your inside breast pocket, don't carry your gun in a shoulder holster unless it is a backup!

If I scout you at the ATM and watch you draw/return your wallet from/to your back pocket and you reach for your breast during the robbery, you will die before you ever touch the pistol grip.

Think like a criminal; identify the threat; prepare/arm yourself accordingly. Then go to the range and practice, practice, practice!

You can never plan for every detail, but if you get something because so-n-so has one, or it looks cool in the catalog, rather than this is practical and will save your life........well, you may not live to see the stupidity of your mistake. /rant

I know all that. I’ve been carrying concealed in Florida for 15 years! My entry into this thread was about my support for someone that built some features into a pair of long pants without cargo pockets that help you wear an IWB comfortably. Some situations do not fit well with cargo shorts and an untucked shirt.

Many pants with elastic waitbands do not have belt loops and vice-versa. I can carry a small handgun in pants without elastic. But carrying a fat handgun (Glock/Beretta widths) requires buying pants one waist size larger which makes for a baggy ass.

The pants in the OP have both, which is a big help for concealed carry in situations where cargo shorts (or even cargo pants) aren’t really acceptable and the elastic allows for the option of small gun/big gun/no gun with nothing but a belt adjustment.

My best and most comfortable setup by far is my S&W .380 in a pocket holster. It has a thumb snap that is easily popped and keeps things very handy when needed. Of course, it works well when wearing blue jeans but not much else.

That S&W .380 is the best concealed carry gun ever! The only thing easier to carry is a pocket knife. It’s been my everyday carry gun since it hit the stores.

I bought it because I knew I would carry it a lot more than my slightly heavier Ruger LC-9...and it has that laser sight. But I got the right kind of holster for the LC-9 and now I can choose which is best depending on my route/destination.

Like I said...ya gotta have choices. And that Ruger is soooo sweet.

I threw out all of my Levi’s jeans and ordered all dickies carpenter jeans. The Dickie’s have a back pocket that is the perfect size for my Taurus 740 Slim it is deep enough to be concealed and on the right leg the small pocket holds my knife and there is a deeper pocket right behind it which will hold my Surefire 6PX Pro or an ASP. The last time I ordered from Dickie’s direct them they told me all of their jeans are made in the USA.

I carry a S&W hammerless 38 special in a galco pocket holster inside my Dickies comfort waist trousers. It’s invisible.

I have the same. Love it.

If you don’t have to get up and go to work in the morning then comfort is the first consideration.

An Hawaiian shirt doesn’t have to hurt your eyes and you don’t have to tuck it in. Look for a nice one at Tori Richards. Khakis are fine if its formal. I’d go with Reef sandals. Nobody mistakes me for a tourist.

Oh and no matching tie. We don’ need not steeenking ties. Too hot down here. ;-)

My hammerless is Sturm Ruger and I told my ‘pal’ to put on my list of ‘shoot me on site’ (if I wear a backpack, luggage (or dog) strapped to roof of SUV etc) if he ever sees me in a fanny pack.

He replied....where else would you carry your 38 spec

Almost sounds good, but I guess it does beat a ‘man purse’
