Ah, I get you now. But I should point out that the regulars who marched to Lexington and Concord were after serious military supplies (cannons, provisions etc) not people’s personal firearms. The idea of confiscating all the colonists’ personal arms would have been considered completely absurd...

Actually much of the revolution was contested with people's personal firearms and up to a point it's hard to separate them from serious military supplies.

The reasoning behind the 2nd amendment wasn't to ratify the right to hunt and shoot burglars, it was the right to resist government when government exceeded it's mandate.

Our constitution exists to protect not only against government excesses but against excesses of democracy too. This poses a problem for anyone trying to use popular demand as justification to disarm American citizens. The principle is often ignored and the abusers get away with it, but the principle still exists.

If all of the citizens of The United States but one voted to abolish all civilian possession of firearms an inalienable right of the one would be violated.

I tend to believe that if you're going to have a constitution at all you should stick to it, no ifs and buts about it.

I hear the refrain "but surely the founders didn't intend that" all too often, when it is obvious that the founders really did intend exactly that. "Shall not be infringed" is pretty damned clear, no ragged edges allowed.

Brits should really be embarrassed for inventing those knives with the funny ends, it's an admission of a failing society, and the USA should be ashamed of allowing the same to happen here.
