President Obama has seen his standing among Catholic voters, a crucial segment of the electorate, slip in recent weeks, and a looming confrontation with Catholic activists could make it worse.
Democrats want voters this year to focus on what they have branded a war on women, but the flip side of the debate the so-called war on religion is not going away anytime soon.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called for two weeks of public protest in June and July against what it sees as growing government encroachment on religious freedom.
The protests are expected to include priests and nuns and thousands of Catholic parishioners. Some activists expect civil disobedience, which could lead to powerful images of priests and nuns being led away in hand restraints.
This is the most dynamic situation Ive ever seen since Ive been involved in Catholics and politics, said Deal Hudson, president of Catholic Advocate, who also headed Catholic outreach for the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign in 2000 and 2004. I think civil disobedience is almost inevitable. I think that kind of protest is on the way.
Republican strategists say the rallies and protests could become powerfully symbolic in the presidential election.
These would be devastating images for the Obama administration, said Ron Bonjean, a Republican strategist. You have a very important religious demographic coming out in protest of Obamas policies and being arrested for their expression. These images would be politically damaging for the presidents campaign.
And the conference could go beyond protests it has also discussed working with evangelical Christian groups on a broader public relations campaign that could include television and radio ads.

Yea’ but, doesn’t this monster already own the faculty/staff/priest/brothers of the formerly Catholic University called Notre Dame? He could point to them as his close and dear friends. They’ll support him, invite him, take down Jesus pictures and statues for him, and agree that it’s ok to slaughter unborn and newly born American babies whenever possible.
So, the (?) living in our White House has Notre Dame’s support and any other Catholic University’s staff that’s on their way to hell.
The Church is betting on SCOTUS to scuttle this entire law and get them off the hook. This will enable much of their flock to go back to voting the straight party “D” handle as they have always done.
If Obama wins, expect retaliation against the Church for daring to oppose him. Removal or restriction of tax exemptions? All-out push to force Catholic hospitals to provide abortions?
The commie leaning Catholics have had the run of the field too damn long, so it’s very good to see the laity not only wake up in increasing numbers, but stand up and show up. YEA!
Hope to see everyone in center field on this one, for a change.
A lot of the faculty at Notre Dame are mad at Bishop Jenky of Peoria for his recent sermon (April 15) and want him removed from the board of regents of the university.
>>There is no way a Catholic could, in good conscience, have voted for Obama in 08 with his baby killing mantra, much less in 12.<<
Our pastor said as much back then but he was preaching to the choir.
Too late for that to happen with any who faithfully follow Church teachings, based solely on current and since-election administration activities.
No, friend, the good bishops must reacquaint themselves with the actions of their ecclesial forbears in Mexico in the teens and twenties of the last century, as well as the actions in France in the late seventeen nineties through the early eighteen hundreds, and act in the light of what transpired then. While our bishops may be largely counting on the Supreme Court insofar as obamacare is concerned, that isn’t the only iron obama has in the fire.
I think Notre Dame sold its soul to the devil many years ago when 1) they went co-ed, and 2) they accepted NON-Catholics on the university just to play sports. Their integrity was therefore severely damaged.
And then to remove pictures of Jesus to placate a filthy muslim abortion loving monster was the end of my having any respect for Notre Dame.
Don't know how your daughter can keep teaching there.
In both of the cases you cite, the Church came out on the losing end of a political battle, which only encouraged anti-clericalism and persecution. If anything those experiences have made them even more gun shy about taking on Obama.
The more progressive ones want to help the poor by giving them housing, food, health care, education, all paid for by the state. The more conservative ones are horrified at abortion.
The Church is pushing both groups, and they are on opposite sides of the political fence. The two groups see themselves as being true to their beliefs, and are getting pushed into a situation where they are supporting a party they don't agree with to advance part of what they see as the most important tenant of their faith.
It will be interesting to see if a pro life but liberal party forms as a result.
I did not hear of them removing pictures of Jesus for Obama (Georgetown covered their IHS monogram, I remember). And our daughter does not teach there; our niece is a student there, as are a number of our other more distant relatives. They go, because they want to help save the college from ruin (while taking advantage of that which is *still* Catholic on campus) and of course, their parents are alumni .. And no one is more ready to take up holy arms and fight for the school than the faithful alumni at Notre Dame.. (Never say die sort of thing.)
I think they still have the huge mosaic on the library building of Jesus signalling a touchdown.
What part of "THE MEDIA IS IN THE TANK FOR OBAMA" isn't being understood by these Pollyannas? The only media play these rallies and protests will get is of the counter-protesters who will be made to appear in much greater numbers.
This stick the Obama Kulturkampf Kids just jabbed into the eye of the Catholic Church may be the best thing that has happened to us in years: and by "us" I mean "us" as Catholics, "us" as Christians, "us" as people of Faith, Hope, Love, Life, and Liberty, "us" as Americans who are really, really attached to the First Amendment, which goes right along with the First Commandment ("No gods but God!") and that other good stuff numbers 2 through 10.
Why? Because now, at last, the U.S. Catholic bishops are 100% on board and motivated, and the ones that are most likely to reject and reverse the liberal-secularist stupidism of the last 40 years are already at the top.
I wouldn't say that most Faith, Family and Freedomites across the fruited plain sit up and perk their ears when they hear the names Dolan, Lori, Chaput, George, Jenky. Not yet. But when these guys get their game face on, believe me, something's happening here.
A great big door is just beginning to turn on a great big hinge.
The present inhabitants of the White House may be beginning --- just beginning ---to feel a bit of a chill.
Yes, the times, they are a-changin'.
I want both things to happen the protests and the SC finding it unconstitutional.
NO Catholic should vote for Obama....NONE!!!!
