James Lovelock, the maverick scientist who became a guru to the environmental movement with his Gaia theory of the Earth as a single organism, has admitted to being alarmist about climate change and says other environmental commentators, such as Al Gore, were too.
Lovelock, 92, is writing a new book in which he will say climate change is still happening, but not as quickly as he once feared.
He previously painted some of the direst visions of the effects of climate change. In 2006, in an article in the U.K.s Independent newspaper, he wrote that before this century is over billions of us will die and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic where the climate remains tolerable.
However, the professor admitted in a telephone interview with msnbc.com that he now thinks he had been extrapolating too far."
The new book will discuss how humanity can change the way it acts in order to help regulate the Earths natural systems, performing a role similar to the harmonious one played by plants when they absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen.
It will also reflect his new opinion that global warming has not occurred as he had expected.
The problem is we dont know what the climate is doing. We thought we knew 20 years ago. That led to some alarmist booksmine includedbecause it looked clear-cut, but it hasnt happened, Lovelock said.
The climate is doing its usual tricks. Theres nothing much really happening yet. We were supposed to be halfway toward a frying world now, he said. The world has not warmed up very much since the millennium.
He pointed to Gores An Inconvenient Truth and Tim Flannerys The Weather Makers as other examples of alarmist forecasts of the future.

They’re arrogant and they know it and they just don’t care.
Thanks for the glow-bull warming ping.
Wow. Expect him to be lynched by progressives as a corporatist, denier, shill for Big Oil, Big Coal, and a flat earther. After they say he’s not a climatologist, therefore he doesnt know what he’s talking about.
I agree. They hold the media megaphone and can tell any lie they want. Our job is to inform people what hell their lives will become if these left wing money grubbing bastards ever get their way.
The glow-bull warming scam shows that science is for sale.
I knew it! I checked around and the warmists are condemning Lovelock as a denier. And that he’s senile and needs to be ignored. On top of that they’re saying he wasn’t alarmist enough back in the day.
Yep. The shade from the vast right-wing conspiracy of these gas particles have been known to blot out the Sun.
The same Sun that the vast left-wing conspiracy of gas-filled politicians have used to drive fear and taxes higher, and thus control the masses of lads and lasses.
BTW, our Native Americans had all this fear-mongering about weather figured out thousands of years ago: they invented the Rain Dance.
BTW, BTW, if Algore had his parade rained on, would he melt? I’m told that he has no reflection when standing in front of a mirror. Probably just a rumor - - - .
It has been 10 minutes since I watched the video on the hotlink that you provided. I am still terrified to even leave my chair.
My dogs are outside and are drinking from a swimming pool of the liquid form of that problematic greenhouse gas.
Soon I hope to get my fear under control, get my dogs inside, and turn on more lights to simulate the light from the Sun.
In a couple of days I may watch your video again, but ONLY in the daytime.
Now the race to salvage some credibility -historically.
Gee-ah...I don’t think so.
BTTT!
Translation: "Its painfully obvious to even the most braindead libtard that I was full of sh!t when I wrote my first book and now that sales have dropped of to nothing I am writing a new book claiming I wasn't wrong about global warming just mistaken about the date of our demise. Buy my new book and I can show when we all die in a fiery holocaust of global warmageddon."
Rest in peace, Waco!
To those who don’t know, Waco (my brother) passed away August 26, 2012 in Warner Robins, GA at the age of 74. We returned him to his home town in Illinois for burial. We had a very special military funeral for him.
(I have never made a post so hopefully some of you FReepers will remember him in your prayers)
What a great last post. Prayers to you on your journey. RIP.
