Why would a Chinese police chief go to the American Consulate instead of the British Consulate to report the murder of a British businessman?
And why would the Americans then turn him over to the Chinese state police?
I suspect he made the mistake of thinking he’d get more protection from the Americans, probably because he knew of American involvement in the whole affair. But it backfired, obviously, since the American government clearly didn’t want attention being drawn to its involvement.
Actually, I don’t think it was the US per se, but rather certain persons in the government. I read somewhere - WSJ? - that Obama personally monitored this whole situation and that it was Obama’s personal decision to put Wang back on the street.

Good question. Maybe because he didn’t trust them? Or maybe because he thought he needed a bigger player? Or maybe he thoght this was his ticket to the U.S.?
Any way you look at it, it was the biggest mistake of his life (aside from telling anyone what he knew). Had he gone to the Brits, he’d most likely be in British hands now.
