Decision 2012: Gingrich Affirms To NY GOP His Presidential Campaign Is Ongoing
NY-1 ^ | 04/19/2012 | Bobby Cuza

With the state's Republican primary looming next week, GOP leaders gathered in Midtown for their annual dinner Thursday night as all thoughts turned to presidential politics. NY1's Bobby Cuza filed the following report.

Newt Gingrich isn’t giving in, at least not until Mitt Romney has the required 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination.

“Mitt’s not yet at 1144 [delegates]. And as you know, this is a big sports town. And you have no obligation to quit until the game’s over," Gingrich said.

Gingrich spoke to NY1 Thursday during a two-day swing through New York ahead of next week’s primary. While he’s promised to pursue his campaign through the August GOP convention, he also says he’ll get behind Romney if he wins the nomination and concedes that could come sooner than later.

“We’ll see," Gingrich said. "I mean, if Romney gets to 1,144 before then, you have to accept mathematical reality. And I’m a party loyalist, and I very much think we have an obligation to beat Obama. So I am going to do everything I can to make sure we win the election."

In remarks at the state Republican party’s annual fundraising dinner Thursday night, Gingrich addressed what he calls a failure to talk honestly about radical Islamists, taking a swipe at Mayor Bloomberg’s response to the failed car bomb in Times Square.

“The mayor promptly goes on TV and says on CBS, ‘We shouldn’t rush to judgment. It could have been somebody who’s opposed to Obamacare,’" Gingrich noted. "Now I want to make two points about this. The first is, statistically, to the best of my knowledge, there have been thousands of bombs in the last decade from radical Islamists. And to the best of my knowledge, there have been no bombs by people opposed to Obamacare."

Still, it’s clear Gingrich’s campaign is at this point, mostly symbolic. Even State Republican Chairman Ed Cox, who introduced Gingrich, is backing his rival.

“In the end, Governor Romney is our nominee going forward at this point," Cox said.

While the results may not ultimately carry much significance, the Republican presidential primary will take place next Tuesday here in New York and four other states.

The primary here in Kentucky is still a month and a day off. I hope and pray that Newt's campaign is still alive and well when I head to the polls May 22.

Me too, and I'm praying.

Dro's family are counting on voting for Newt, regardless.

I thought I read that they calculated Newt’s SuperPAC might have $5 million on hand from previous donations. I don’t think there was a new one this month.

He probably needs the money to handle travel and his staff expenses without going further into debt.

Running the Redstate Numbers one more time for the uniformed:

* Romney must win over 60% of all remaining hard delegates to secure the GOP nomination. Surprised?

*Romney still needs 663 delegates

*869 hard delegates are available at the state and district level... (discounting the 37 total delegates available between Indiana and Arkansas

This Primary Race Is Not Over For Newt or For US.....there is still time for God to act!

I’m faling sleep, so I will have to read your reply tomorrow, but is Newt running ads on TV and radio?

If PA is the same as Mississippi, when I voted all the names of all the previous candidates were on my ballot, including Bachamnn, Governorn Perry and maybe Herman Cain, but not sure about him.

My point, is that your ballot will likely include more names than Gingrich and Romney, so Romney will likely win, dammit it all.

However, tell everyone you know to vote Newt and let’s see what happpens!

Good night and God bless and Keep you

I’m up very early this morning....listening to the Battle of Tours, Charles Martel....but no I haven’t seen any adverizing for Newt but I’m not one you should ask..Pa.Engineer might know better. I don’t watch TV. I select news and movies etc what I want to watch on line only.

Yes I realize all candidates will be on the ballot. I will vote Newt as you know. Likely Phila. and Pittsburgh will go strong for Romney, maybe Erie.... so he may just take it....but the rural areas are more conservative...and there’s lots of them. PA. went red with the Tea Party push before, so I’m hoping that will also make a difference.

I hate this election..and the general we haven’t even had yet. It all just plain sucks as there’s no longer any concern about voters vote....it’s all about states and delegates, and who is for sale.

I sometimes wonder just exactly what it will take for people to wake up! They aren’t hurting enough in mass to take any stand against this yet....but I think the politicians know it’s coming and trying to cut Newt and the people off at the knees...and get Romney in fast before there’s any stand to take! So far they are winning Onyx...they are....only God can move this primary now and I’m just afraid he may have left man to his own vices now.

Newt is the answer I believe fully.....and if the trajectory is going to change then God has to open the way in a remarkable way now....He still has time to act.

Thanks very much for your gracious reply. I was afraid he wasn’t running ads. The media are shutting him out, but that’s been going on for months.
