Rick Santorum, the winner of Alabama's Republican presidential primary, hasn't released his 22 Alabama delegates to support another candidate, but delegates said they expect to unite behind Mitt Romney if he locks up the GOP nomination.
....Santorum won Alabama's GOP primary March 13, picking up 22 delegates, compared with 13 for Newt Gingrich and 12 for Romney.
Even though Santorum has suspended his campaign, the rules of the Alabama Republican Party bind his delegates to him until he releases them.
Dean participated in a conference call with Santorum on Monday, during which the former Pennsylvania senator told delegates he has no immediate plans to release them. Dean said Santorum is hanging on to the delegates for now to make sure conservative principles play an important role at the Republican National Convention in late August.
Delegate Tom Powers of Clanton said that if Romney gets the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination before the August convention, he expects Santorum to release his Alabama delegates and encourage everyone to give Romney a 100 percent vote in Tampa, Fla.
Delegate Tripp Skipper of Anniston, an aide to Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, said that even though Santorum was his first choice, Romney appears to be the presumptive nominee.
"I'd much rather have Governor Romney as president than President Obama," Skipper said.
State Party Chairman Bill Armistead said it was obvious that Romney would win the nomination. He said some of Santorum's supporters in Alabama are already helping Romney's campaign, and he expects more to come on board.
Gingrich is still seeking the nomination and has his 13 Alabama delegates. Armistead said he hopes Gingrich won't become divisive because "there is no path to victory for him to get the nomination."

PA and lack of money go hand in hand.
Surely I’m not first to mention that...I’ve seen it referenced quite a bit.
There was going to be a war for PA, and Romney was ready to spend whatever it took.
Rick did not want to lose his birth state again, while spending himself deep into debt to try to prevent it.
Yes, Pa. was another reason..of course.
And Rom and CO. threatened Rick that they would “destroy” him if he didn’t drop out.
Nice.
I think Newt has alot to offer to the Conservative cause.
Think about what he CAN do:
Raise money for candidates, speaking engagements, infiltrate the liberal universities and teach, be a cabinet member, etc.
All that I am saying is that he won’t be our nominee. It may be hard to swallow but it’s a fact.
His staying in the race serves no purpose at this time.
Yes!
I should clarify...Adelson’s WIFE gave Newt’s PAC...not Newt himself...5 mil in March.
People who take satisfaction in disparaging Romney's chances are simply avoiding reality. Like him or don't like him, not that I give a sh*t, what people think makes no difference in the reality that Romney has many advantages against Obama that McCain didn't have, and at that, McCain could have won if he hadn't been a mentally defective asshole.
But there is proof of what you say in my home state of WI..
WI has mountains?
I was and still am a Santorum supporter...
Really?! Why did you say this then?
Santorum is scary.
I abhor Mittens...
You're "loyal opposition" and play "devil's advocate" in my book.
You smash mouth anybody and everybody who supports Newt.
That's all I need to know.
You've been pegged.
when I say there's not a snowballs chance in heck I would EVER waste one vote on Newt Gingrich ..
...after ALL the ugly, sarcastic vitriol you and others here post regularly.
I don't believe you would recognize conviction, true patriotism and character if it hit you in the face.
To trash Mary like you just did is beyond understanding save to say.....You have no class....and that's putting it mildly.

Oh, boo friggin hoo! You're not going to vote for somebody because of what someone says here? RIGHT! Give me a break! That's the weakest BS I've ever heard in my life.
And since you're on your high horse why don't you take your girl to task for the BS that rolls from her fingertips?
I don't believe you would recognize conviction, true patriotism and character if it hit you in the face.
I can. I can also recognize BS when I smell it.
To trash Mary like you just did...
I didn't trash her. I took her up on her offer to look at her replies. Her replies speak for themselves.
You have no class....and that's putting it mildly.
Put it strongly then.
I happen to live in two places, Phil...thus home state of WI. and a log home in the Rocky Mts. Actually I also have a home in Northern WI. So that makes three. How many do you have?
If you got off your fat arse and made a success of yourself, you might have multiple homes too!
I don’t smash mouth you or anyone else. I tell it like it is. You people are living in a freaking bubble of denial about Newt.
You look ridiculous for continuing to act as though he will be our nominee and attacking those who know his campaign is over.
So Phil baby, wipe the oatmeal off of your chin, get off of your mother’s couch and do something to help our Republic, instead of plunking out your hatred all day long anonymously to people that really don’t care a whit what you have to say.
Guenie: I know who I am and what I stand for as a patriot/grassroots activist/grandmother of seven/mother of four/woman of deep faith and a Conservative philanthropist.
Words like Phil’s bounce off of me due the armour of God’s grace around me and just show him for who and what he truly is: an arrogant, mean spirited man.
God bless you, Guenie, Laz and all the other like minded Freepers who aren’t afraid to stand up to bullies like Phil.
Thank you butterdezillion. Beautiful sentiments and lyrics from one of my faves, Casting Crowns.
Rick IS standing up for us Conservatives whom he knows are still with him.
I am so proud to be part of Rick’s Army and to have met the courageous Santorum family.
Hold on, butter. We have God on our side and He won’t let us down.
Romney extracting endorsements from pro life groups is sickening, isn’t it?
Well, he can’t keep up the facade forever. His mask(s) will come off, hopefully sooner than later.
We need to be warriors for truth and continue to stand up for our principles and values and trust that all will be well with our souls.

For the stupid in you, Phil. Do you not comprehend the concept of living in two states: one with mountains, one without? LOL.
There is a way to increase our numbers in the house and senate with Romney as the GOP candidate. Offer up a Sarah Palin/Tea Party ticket for president and run and endorse tea party candidates for other offices. It’ll serve to turn out a far larger number of anti-obama/democrat votes.
I can even envision this ticket winning as both Obama and Romney are very unpopular. The best thing is that it’ll serve to put the frickin’ GOP-Elites in their place.
I’ll also add that there are a huge number of citizens totally fed up with both parties and are up for grabs this election.
You people are living in a freaking bubble of denial about Newt.
Just for you...

Remember the meme, boys and girls...Newt can't win!
See it in action again tbf.
Lots of things are being said in the heat of battle that are making it hard for natural allies to work together. Newt and Santorum are natural allies. They believe in the same things, and I believe they both are willing to do what it takes to fight for this country and for the conservative principles that have made this country a beacon of freedom and prosperity. Neither one would want their supporters to get side-tracked over PERSONAL politics rather than focus on what the country needs.
At different points I’ve been so frustrated with both of them that I was ready to swear I would never have anything to do with either one. But in the end I have to do what I believe is best for the country, and the best thing is to have a conservative who can lead this country back to its founding principles if elected. If Rick was still in the race I’d have to choose between him or Newt in Nebraska’s primary in a couple weeks. Now Newt is the only conservative choice I have.
I originally wanted Herman Cain, and some of the Newt people were frustrating to me because it seemed like they had such “party spirit” (breaking into their little party and not giving anybody else either respect or a chance). That was disturbing, so I can relate to what you’re saying.
In the end, I think maybe they were acting out of their conviction and patriotism - because they truly believed that Newt was what we needed and that Cain was a distraction. And I must confess that I’ve been disappointed by Cain since then, so maybe they were wiser after all. Hard to say.
In any event it’s not they who are running; it’s Newt, Paul, and Romney. If you have a vote still to be cast, I hope you will vote for Newt based on what he stands for, but if you can’t vote for Newt because it’s just too much to swallow, I hope you will vote for Ron Paul - because at this point any delegate that doesn’t go to Romney gets us one step closer to a convention where the conservatives still have a voice. That’s what both Newt and Rick are emphasizing right now, and I think they are both wise and rightly-focused in that. I’m proud of both of them, for standing together for this country. And I am happy to stand shoulder to shoulder with the supporters of both of them; we have so much in common that we’re fighting for.
RC one: “sweater vest wants to ensure he gets picked for VP...”
newzjunkey: “More to secure his status as ‘next in line’ for 2016...”
So he’s damned if he does, and damned if he doesn’t. SOME of you guys are so transparent that you lose credibility.
