Of the denizens of Wally’s Nightclub, no one was as hungry for success as Eddie Rabbitt. He had grown up in North Jersey and became a walking encyclopedia of country music in his teens. Dropping out of high school, he went to Nashville and took a series of menial jobs while writing songs at night. A pitch to Chips Moman in 1969 gave him his first success, a gold record and a lot of money to spend on beer. This song is a masterpiece.
