Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, a moderate Democrat, says that likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney may have trouble in the general election because his father was born on a polygamy commune in Mexico, the Daily Beast reports.
Schweitzer told the news site that it would be a tall order to position Hispanics to vote for Romney, which he said was kinda ironic considering his family came from a polygamy commune in Mexico. However, Schweitzer continued, Romney is unlikely to talk about his family coming from a polygamy commune in Mexico because women are not great fans of polygamy, 86 percent were not great fans of polygamy.
I am not alleging by any stretch that Romney is a polygamist and approves of [the] polygamy lifestyle, but his father was born into [a] polygamy commune in Mexico, he continued.
Romneys father, the late George Romney, was born in Mexico at a settlement founded by Mormons who had fled the United States anti-polygamy laws. He went on to become the CEO of the American Motor Company, a popular Governor of Michigan and the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Richard Nixon.
George Romneys parents were in a monogamous marriage and moved back to the United States when he was still a child. The Romney campaign did not comment on Schweitzers remarks, which were promptly condemned by President Obamas re-election team.

Sorry...as much as you would love to censor keyboards & perhaps smash up printing sources -- in Joseph Smith's spirit of Nauvoo unleashed -- that's an overreach for you.
I agree. I supported Hunter in 07-08.
Maybe He's the one we should "write in" as a Third-Party vote.
We get it, you hate Mormons. You hate Romney. You're a lunatic fanatic who can't SHUT UP!!
We know you already have a "blah" personality...you don't need to stutter with such forth with such "articulate" verbosity.
Thanks for your hate-filled rant "update" about me...I feel the "love"...
Good luck electing Obama with your Third Party campaign. No one’s falling for it this time, you stinkin’ Democrat.
Old governor Brian is still looking for that frog puppet. It ran off with his brain.
Barack Sr. had two wives at the same time, one in Kenya and one in Hawaii--if Barack's story is to be believed.
The Obama team would be foolish to make the polygamy of a hundred years ago an issue, when bigamy is so recent and relevant in their own guy's history.
Big deal. Our current President's father was a Negro communist from Kenya, and his mother was a dipsh-it liberal who studied basket-weaving in Indonesia as part of her PhD thesis. I'd take the polygamist Mormon any day.
Big deal, Romney’s father (until he was all of 5) and his paternal grandparents lived in a polygamist community, but were not polygamists. You have to go back to two of his great grandfathers to find any who had multiple wives.
Meanwhile BHO’s father had multiple wives, and was married to his first wife when he knocked up, and supposedly married, BHO’s mother. He later married two other women, one of whom was also an American. His grandfather Obama had 4 wives, the max allowed under Islam, so he probably had some concubines as well. BHO’s great grandfather had 5, but he may not have been a Muslim.
I suspect the Governor offered up that as a distraction from BHO’s record in office. Just like the “war on women” thing was.
McCain's father was born in America, as was his grandfather McCain. Both were serving Naval Officers at the time of John's birth.
The controversy with McCain is that he was not born in the US, but rather either on a US Naval base in the Panama Canal zone, (his and his mother's version) or in a hospital in Colon Panama(some others' contention). Those others say there was no hospital on the base, which may or may not be true, but there was a doctor, and likely an infirmary. Doctors made house calls in those days. My mother wasn't born in a hospital, and she was born only 9 years before McCain. (1927 vs 1936) The hospital I was born in goes back to 1889, but they didn't have any babies born there until 1941. A military doctor would especially have made a house call for the wife of an officer, and the daughter in law of an Admiral.
Not that it matters, "Law of Nations", states that those born to parents "in the service of the country", though outside of it, are considered "born in the country". It's a couple of paragraphs down from where it states that those born in a country of parents who are its citizens, are "natural born citizens" of that country.
I should have clarified myself, I know that about McCain;but at the Obama Obama first ran; they had to have someone they could use and MCain closest.
