How in the world was this nation settled without grocery stores around the corner?

Can a person make a trip to the store and buy groceries for the week? I regularly do that. Maybe it’s unhealthy and I didn’t know it....

What company or individual is stupid enough to put a grocery store in the hood. They will be ripped off by mob rob capers, shoplifters, get sued constantly for discrimination, etc. etc. etc. and more grief than any probable profit would ever be worth.

I remember in Las Vegas when the only Costco was on Martin Luther King Blvd. That really worked out great, when we went to Vegas, one Costco shopping trip was more than enough for us. Costco then wised up and built a store out in the suburbs. Don't know if the Costco on MLK Blvd is still there or not.

The president grew up in Hawaii. He lived in Indonesia and had a transvestite nanny. I don’t think those places are food deserts. He went to an Ivy League university prior to choosing to work as a community organizer in Chicago. He then attended Harvard Law School. Do they not teach how to grow food at those pricey schools? I bet the president knew where to get some of the white powdery stuff in Chicago without having to hop a bus or subway. Priorities.

Gee, if you live in the White House, I’d imagine it’s quite a schlep to the the nearest grocery store, but do you really want to make such situations the basis for public policy for the rest of the country? A lot of “food deserts” may be in wealthy, gated communities.

Just thought I'd correct the title a little.

“Why has all this work been such a priority for the president and every one of us in the administration?” Donovan said. “Because he knows what you know: He knows what it’s like to walk the halls of public housing because he’s worked there.”

He sure does. He knows public housing very well.

Obama's "community organizing" left Chicago neighborhoods in ruins.

Grim proving ground for Obama's housing policy

"About 99 of the units are vacant, many rendered uninhabitable by unfixed problems, such as collapsed roofs and fire damage. Mice scamper through the halls. Battered mailboxes hang open. Sewage backs up into kitchen sinks. In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale - a score so bad the buildings now face demolition."

Long article, lots of details, lots of names both familiar (Rezko) and unfamiliar.

100 years ago, in Pittsburgh and all of your major cities and small towns, there were grocers, produce vendors, meat markets, every few blocks.

Why would anyone think that was a better system, with very limited choices and necessarily higher prices without the economy of scale?

Obama is a real luddite, thinking the people would want to go back to what they have rejected already by their choices.
