Obama Once Needed 'to Take a Subway or a Bus Just to Find a Fresh Piece of Fruit’ By Penny Starr April 18, 2012

(CNSNews.com) - Barack Obama's vision as president is shaped by the fact that he knows what "it's like to take a subway or a bus just to find a fresh piece of fruit in a grocery store," Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan said last week.

Donovan seemed to be suggesting that the president had once lived in what First Lady Michelle Obama now refers to as a "food desert"--a place without a nearby supermarket. The First Lady has launched an initiative to eliminate these places.

“Why has all this work been such a priority for the president and every one of us in the administration?” Donovan said. “Because he knows what you know: He knows what it’s like to walk the halls of public housing because he’s worked there.”

“He knows what it’s like to walk the streets of some of our cities’ poorest neighborhoods because he’s lived there,” Donovan said. “What it’s like to take a subway or a bus just to find a fresh piece of fruit in a grocery store.”

Donovan also said the president had to “wonder” about whether he could “afford a college education or decent health care” or be “judged” unfairly.

That’s nothing. I used to have to walk two miles through driving snow, uphill both ways, to get to school. When I was a kid, we couldn’t afford real cereal...we ate wood and rocks.

Well what was it, the subway or a bus? If he can’t remember the form of transportation then maybe it wasn’t a piece of fruit he was after :)

I have heard of one time he had to ride in a limousine to get a “piece of fruit”, too.

“The term ‘food desert’ drives me crazy! I grew up 20 miles from the nearest Kroger store and NO there wasn’t public transportation to tke us there!”

Yeah, but you were probably in the suburbs. This is an innercity problem, with (as always) black women and children and other vulnerable groups hit the hardest. It’s not their fault, as greedy capitalists gouge them with high prices and low quality because...um, they’re racist.

If things keep going the way the Marxist wants, we will drive 15 miles on a bike, wait in line for 3 days just to get FOOD!

Was his mother so lazy she didn’t go grocery shopping? If he was older and living on his own, what the heck is wrong with taking public transportation to pick up some groceries? I thought that’s what we were supposed to do, being good little environmentalists and all.

the fact that he knows what “it’s like to take a subway or a bus to Boystown just to find a fresh piece of hanging fruit”.

I live 3 1/2 miles from the nearest store. I need to drive, ‘cause there aren’t any buses or subways.

BFD Obeyme.

If you live within the proximity of a subway station, chances are there’s a grocery store nearby. What an idiot.

By the way, I realize viewing things from the Founders’ perspective is overused, but think about it for a second. Can you imagine Madison’s reaction to being told that in 240 years or so the federal government will worry about whether or not there’s a grocery store within a mile of your house? They had to walk a mile to go to the bathroom, for the love of Obama.

Woman runs through the mall, screaming: THE NAVY FLEET JUST DOCKED AT THE WHARF....LOCK UP YOUR DAUGHTERS...THE NAVY IS IN TOWN. LOCK UP YOUR DAUGHTERS.

Onlookers shrug their shoulders and figure her for just another nut case kook, as they continue shopping.

Few minutes later, a man runs through the mall screaming : OBAMA JUST CAME IN TO TOWN TO CAMPAIGN....LOCK UP YOUR DOGS...OBAMA'S IN TOWN. LOCK UP YOUR DOGS.

The mall immediately emptied out and the traffic was backed up for an hour.

I know what he means. I grew up poor too. We had to drive all the way to town, 15 miles, to buy coconuts! If only the government had placed a fruit stand within walking distance, perhaps the transmission on our ‘55 Plymouth would have lasted longer.

Amazon.com will deliver groceries, but I don’t know if they accept EBT cards.

I still live 20 miles from the one and only grocery store in town and 6 miles from the one and only convenience store around here. Of course, no public transportation either. Yet, somehow, without Moochelle butting her nose into it, four generations have managed not to starve here.

Nikita Kruschev had to fly half way around the world for corn flakes. That doesn’t mean his redesign of Soviet agriculture to force the attepted raising of corn in Russia was a good idea.

I'm willing to bet they didn't go the whole mile.
