Less than two months ago, Herman Cain, who was out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, stood on a stage in West Palm Beach, just three days before the Florida primary and told the crowd, I hereby officially and enthusiastically endorse Newt Gingrich for the president of the Unites States. Gingrich had just come off a sweeping win in South Carolina, had the fundraising dollars pouring in and a financial safety net in billionaire donor Sheldon Adelson.
But on Monday Cain walked back his endorsement of Gingrich saying, With all due respect, lets get on with this, OK?
I even endorsed Newt Gingrich at one point because I thought that he had a shot. Well, not now. He doesnt have a shot, Cain said to Washington radio station WMAL.
A former Cain staffer told ABC News that Cains call for Gingrich to bow out isnt surprising.
He likes to go with his gut. Mr. Cain walked up to line of joining the establishment without crossing it, the former Cain staffer said.
Cain refused to comment to ABC News Monday over this mornings comments about Gingrich, but Gingrich campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond said the party is trying is lock down the nomination.
The angle right now is for the party to get to a nominee as fast as possible, Hammond said. Its up to Herman Cain whether or not hes put in his application with the establishment.
Cain wasnt the only Republican candidate to...endorse the not-Romney candidate. Rick Perry also endorsed Gingrich when he left the race.
A spokesman for Perry, Catherine Frazier, told ABC News that he will stay loyal to Gingrich but will support the eventual nominee.
Gov. Perry puts a premium on loyalty and hell back Gingrich as long as hes in the race, Frazier said.

Agree. I voted Newt and would still if my state had to vote in this primary. Cain should have stuck with Newt for a little while longer. I don’t blame him too much. This is all but over. Cain endorsed Romney last time, just a many good conservatives did down the stretch. DeMint among others. Cain did not end up butting heads with romney too much like Perry and Newt did.
Yes, and if you stop and think about it, many were probably Romney supporters. Even some posing as Cain supporters.
One reason I supported Perry was you could trust his word, and he is proving that now.
It will defeat itself.
That is all it knows how to do.
In fact, it is already dead.
OK, how about this.
I’m going to vote for Mitt Romney because he’s a caucasoid.
I don’t really need much more reason than that in America 2012.
I love how everyone in the world is wrong but Freepers
I didn’t know you were a poet. :-)
Mitt Romney, just like his father, George Romney, were friends with Saul Alinsky. Shocking.
Are they disciples of Alinsky? Mitt Romney is a self-avowed progressive, a national socialist like Hillary Clinton. You make up your own mind.
Do some research on Romney’s record as a governor. Nothing he did as governor of Massachusetts was conservative. He cannot be pushed to the ‘right’ because he doesn’t believe in it. For him, government is God.
Rush Limbaugh ceased to be a conservative quite some time ago.
The Judas!!! The Quisling!!!
The sheer gall!!!
Perry was crucified on FR...as were Perrywinkles.
Only to those who didn't see the reality of who he is and what he was doing.
Rick Perry was crucified on FR.
Lot of confused FReepers!
I will NEVER forget it. I’m clutching that grudge to my bosom for life. I made a list. If I could just find it (ha) ... I would hunt those people down like dogs and make them pay.
Because of his back surgery and pain meds, he entered too soon and flubbed a couple of debates.
But he is a great speaker, fun, charming and right on all the issues.
If he decides to campaign for Romney, which he probably will after Texas votes, he will be a huge asset.
You are absolutely spot on FRiend! It was disgusting but you know, it was just the ‘vetting’ process. Incivility is normal; lying and distortions are normal too and when you are falsely accused and called despicable names, it’s not to be taken personally. I found that out just yesterday. Did you know that Lonestar?
When I found that out, there was a big face palm here!
Hear, hear my FRiend...
btw ping to #55
Newt was pretty much already out on April 8 when he said he was broke and operating on a shoe string and acknowledged that Romney was going to be the nominee. He only reneged on those words and jumped back in after Santorum quit. Quite the statesman.
It’s very disappointing.
We tried to tell everyone that Perry was the ONLY candidate with the record and the money to beat Romney. We got slapt down everytime. He was never given a chance because of stupid stuff like a Gardisil mandate that never happened and a 10 year Texas law regarding instate tuiion that didnt affect anyone other than Texans.
As for his debate skills, he was getting better and better and was darn good at the end.
I suspect many would have a diffent atittude if they could turn back he hands of time but they would never admit it.
As for Cain, he never had a record to examine just some puff promises that went up in smoke when the going got tough. Then he blamed Perry. What a jerk!
Now look where we are.
