President Barack Obama tried to quash a brewing political mess this afternoon by absolutely slamming Hilary Rosen's comments on Ann Romney.
First, he told an ABC affiliate: "There's no tougher job than being a mom." Not even the President, apparently.
Then he doubled down on past comments that a candidate's family should be off limits:
I dont have a lot of patience for commentary about the spouses of political candidates, he told KCRG.
My general view is those of us who are in the public life, were fair game. Our families are civilians, he said. I havent met Mrs. Romney, but she seems like a very nice woman who is supportive of her family and supportive of her husband. I dont know if she necessarily volunteered for this job so, you know, we dont need to be directing comments at them. I think me and Governor Romney are going to have more than enough to argue about during the course of this campaign.
He didn't address comments from Republican members of the House of Representatives earlier in the day, one of whom suggested that Obama would have said the same thing as Rosen. Members of Obama's staff had already distanced themselves from the comments, including David Axelrod and Press Secretary Jay Carney. Michelle Obama also joined in the backlash on Twitter, tweeting that "every mother works hard, and every woman deserves to be respected."
During the 2008 campaign, Obama said the same thing about Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's family after it was revealed that her 17-year-old daughter Bristol was pregnant.
"Let me be as clear as possible. I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children

Where’s the Barf Alert?
A retraction from the architect of division. His flying monkeys do HIS WORK and anyone who thinks otherwise is as dumb as a modern day media journalist.
That’s a huge Bus!
Where is the question about this Rosen visiting the
white house so many times?
I dont have a lot of patience for commentary about the spouses of political candidates, he told KCRG.

Amazing—I’ve found something to respect in Obama. A first.
Though, I have no doubts AT ALL— that Ann Romney can take care of herself.
I hate Santorum but his wife was my favorite of candidate wives. We never got to know Callista, though I suspect she would have been the most classy FLOTUS of the bunch. I will certainly regret that loss.
He's the architect of the "Republican war on women".
Oh, Obambi....that is rich....YOU YOURSELF began the bashing, albeit in a more subtle way, last week.
Don’t worry, bambi...your girl Hilary said it...you remember Hilary, the girl who has been to your current residence several times....and the girl you got to work for your DNC lap-poodle....
the record is clear, Bambi. You hate stay at home moms.
Obama is a hypocrite. He brought all this stuff into it wiht his “Michelle had to work” rhetoric.
His words today are a charade.
Thirty five (35) times, I believe it is.
The women on the local talk radio station were PISSED! Rosen struck a nerve and they’re still on fire about it.
This is beginning to look like a “Sister Soulja” gambit.
Typical Progressive modus operandi. Throw out poison one day then apologize the next day and just say “nothing to see here ...move along”. The trouble is the progressive new media, NBC, ABC, CBS, and CNN give them a pass on it. My hope is that if this Republic falls, I see all those alleged news companies shut down and all those alleged journalists arrested before they come to get me.
Obama is a liar you can not listen to a word he says.
Republicans are often idiots, but Democrats are even worse...I can’t think of a BETTER WAY to galvaninze support for Romney from conservatives than this. Great job! And then, leave it to Dumbo to chime in with pithy comments!
PS: Axelrod - the next time you try this, do see if you can find someone who is not a consumer of flooring products.
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Yeah? How about being a roofer. In Phoenix. In July.
You said it well brother!! I am not at all thrilled with Romney at top of the ticket... however, this boils my blood. I go back and forth on voting for Gary Johnson (L), but these comments remind me how stupid these people are and will probably make me pull the lever for Romney.
Obomba is more like a Mafia Don....someone else does his dirty work...
