Dr. Charles Ogletree, who taught both Barack and Michelle Obama at Harvard Law School, aid during the National Action Network convention Wednesday that the slain teen Trayvon Martin is a “symbol of whats wrong” with America. Complaining about the Florida “stand your ground” law that may protect Martin’s killer George Zimmerman from prosecution, Ogletree encouraged his audience of activists to imagine the racial tables were turned. “Just think about changing the race,” Ogletree said. “I want to see the first black man who uses the ‘stand your ground’ defense and see if it works — first

I think a lot of black people are too ignorant of the law to cite it.

Anyway, holding your gun sideways and gunning down some random guy because he's from another gang doesn't really count as self-defensee anyway.

I was sitting in a lit. class and the professor was ranting that black males aged 16-28 are "singled out," citing the fact that they make up the largest prison population, so therefore they must be getting picked on! It didn't seem to occur to her that that demographic commits the most crimes.

“Just think about changing the race,” Ogletree said. “I want to see the first black man who uses the ‘stand your ground’ defense and see if it works —”

He really means he wants to see a black man use the ‘stand your ground’ defense after he kills a white person just so he can see if it would work.

Nice, real nice.

Maybe Chuck Ogletree would put his life in the hands of the thug slamming his head into the concrete but I wouldn't. I guess Chuck would bet his life on the thug tiring out or losing interest before his skull caved in completely. The wrest of us would react just like Zimmerman did.

If a black man defends himself against some white punk robber, I'd support the black man.
It's the situation, not the race.
Race pimps only see the race, not the situation.

I would guess that black perps entering white households are far more common than the converse. Call it what it is: a black mentality that feels they’re protected, and can take what they want.

Here is a close, but not exact same case. In Iowa we don’t have ‘stand your ground’ or even ‘castle’, more like ‘scream and run’. I have heard a sheriff say the same thing the prosecutor said in the case - don’t be afraid of trials, the law worked. I guess they can discount the fact that the guy lost almost everything, spent time in jail, and did nothing wrong.

That comment is unfounded.

We are still waiting several years for the first white guy to break into a black guy’s house. /s

There must be one out there somewhere.

First he’d have to find an example of whites breaking into a black person’s house, and for the life of me all I ever see are stories of blacks home invading white folks houses.

Mr Ogletree is correct. It *is* a symbol of a very serious sociological problem here."No Limits N***a"..."f**k some bi**h" for starters.

“There must be one out there somewhere.”

I’m pretty sure there are a number of them, I remember seeing a few reported here on FR...

I don’t think any of them involved a black man shooting a white thug though.

Those that can’t do teach , those that can’t teach ,end up at Harvard ?

My Dad,who never attended college (Depression baby, parents couldn't afford it),wound up supervising many Harvard (and MIT) grads during his career. He had a couple of funny sayings about Harvard..."you can always tell a Harvard man but you can't tell him much" and "how do you like your oysters? Raw,raw, raw." ("raw" was said in a phony upper crust accent).

I,too, have had much contact with Harvard students/grads.Never supervised any though.I worked at one of the large Harvard hospitals for many years and many of the doctors (junior and senior ones) were Harvard grads. You could always tell the Harvard grads from grads of other schools because they could talk for 6 hours about the uvula but were clueless when you handed them a pop-open umbrella.

Hmmmm...white Omar Bonilla, I think 2008? He was unarmed, shot dead by a black man under the stand your ground act.

I think this was in Florida.

Here it is:

“Florida stand your ground law cases

The controversial stand your ground law that police initially cited in their decision not to charge the man who shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin has been invoked at least 140 times statewide since 2005. A Tampa Bay Times survey, compiled from Florida newspapers and public records, shows that police and prosecutors continue to apply the self defense law unevenly.

Cases

Defendant: Demarro Battle
Victim: Omar Bonilla

Case Details

Incident date: July 17, 2009

Location: During party at victim’s home, 3670 Pearl St., in Fort Myers, Lee County

What happened: Battle fatally shot Bonilla after an argument at a party. Earlier in the dispute, Bonilla had fired his gun into the ground, but then he ran inside his apartment, gave his gun to a friend and returned unarmed to confront Battle. Battle, meanwhile, had retrieved his gun from his car and shot Bonilla.

The outcome: Battle was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. But charges were dropped by the state attorney. “Under current Florida law the defendant had no duty to retreat,” assistant state attorney wrote.

Fatalities: 1

Weapon: gun

Investigating agency: Fort Myers Police
