Oh no - I sure hope they are wrong about a Tsunami - 8.7 and it will be another huge one if it was below the ocean. Prayers up for those folks and I hope that the 2001(?) Tsunami helped prepare them for this.

Aloha Biglook. Just a quick fyi. This hopefully won’t affect you but in case you hear about it, just wanted to give you a heads up. It’s big, it’s shallow and happened about an hour ago but doesn’t look like there’s any possibility of a tsunami heading your way.

Fairly deep at 32 km so that is a good thing - but see that it is in the ocean. Looks about the same fault as the 2001(?) event but further south IIRC.

There’s always a tsunami with an 8+ quake in the ocean. Likely to be ugly again.

Yes - I wasn’t sure if it was in the ocean or not. And i see that I was wrong on the 32km being ‘deep”. Well it is better than some of the shallow ones we have on the west coast, but the 2004 Indian Ocean quake/Tsunami was at 30km. So obviously this could be an almost near repeat of that one (about a 9.0 magnitude).
Wow.

Oh, and it looks to be on the same fault, and perhaps only 100-200km south. As I said, I hope that they learned from 2004. I know sensors were put out in the ocean - but the epicenter being so close to Sumatra that won’t help them.

No tsunami in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, north of epicenter. Silence, as after Boxing Day quake in 2004, from Banda Aceh, western Sumatra.
Tremors were felt in eastern India.
