As the shooting of Trayvon Martin in Florida continues to dominate headlines around the world, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay publicly demanded an investigation of the incident and the prosecution of shooter George Zimmerman. She also expressed concerns about the states Stand Your Ground law that allows would-be victims to defend themselves.
Speaking at a press conference in Barbados, Pillay joined the growing chorus of race-profiteers, anti-gun zealots, and supposed civil rights activists in attempting to exploit the tragedy. "As High Commissioner for Human Rights, I call for an immediate investigation," she told the press, apparently unaware that local, state, and federal investigations were already well underway to determine the facts in the case.
The February 26 shooting of black 17-year-old Martin by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman oddly dubbed a white Hispanic by much of the press has fueled a firestorm of controversy. Zimmerman maintains that he was attacked and fired in self-defense. So far, he has not been charged with a crime.
But the killing sparked a wave of indignation among professional race baiters such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. President Obama even waded into the debate with controversial remarks on Martins race, sparking outrage and widespread criticism. And infamous racists including the New Black Panther Party latched onto the fatal shooting to call for vigilante justice by offering a bounty on Zimmerman.
Involvement from the UN, however, has taken the hysteria to a new level. "Justice must be done for the victim, insisted Pillay, a South African, without knowing the facts since investigations to determine the circumstances are still underway. It's not just this individual case. It calls into question the delivery of justice in all situations like this."
The tragedy also led to a renewed push for more infringements on Americans rights to firearms and self-defense. The anti-gun lobby promptly sprang into action after the case attracted national attention, and the establishment press dutifully followed variously suggesting that the shooting was not self-defense, but that laws permitting would-be victims to defend themselves were somehow to blame anyway.
Pillay jumped on the bandwagon, too, taking aim at the popular Stand Your Ground law that has been enacted in some 20 American states. However, Zimmermans attorney has said his client was not even invoking the protections offered by that law, so it was not clear why the UN appointee found it relevant.
"The law should operate equally in respect of all violations, the global bodys human rights chief said, noting that she was shocked that Zimmerman had not been arrested. I will be awaiting an investigation and prosecution and trial and of course reparations for the victims concerned."
Of course, in America, the U.S. and state Constitutions recognize that everyone has the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law by a jury of their peers. Americans also cherish their unalienable right to keep and bear arms also protected by the Constitution despite UN pressure to infringe upon it.
Ironically, the misnamed UN Human Rights Council is composed of more than a few Islamist or communist dictatorships that are notorious around the world for abusing the rights of their subjects. Prominent U.S. lawmakers are even seeking an American withdrawal from the dubious body. Consider: The tyrannical regimes ruling over Cuba, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, and China, for example among the most despotic on Earth are all represented on the council.
But the irony did not escape notice for long. After news of Pillays comments broke, analysts variously criticized and ridiculed the UNs purported interest in the case, calling it highly inappropriate. American critics of Pillays remarks in particular unleashed a tsunami of contempt for the global body and its human rights apparatus across the web.
Just what we need: The Dictators Club nosing around in American affairs, wrote conservative commentator Bryan Preston. Surely Pillay has larger and more pressing human rights issues to concern herself with.... There is an investigation ongoing. Now, please go meddle in someone elses country.
Other observers suggested the global body could start by investigating the widespread sex crimes committed around the world by troops under its command. Probing the atrocious human rights records of the various totalitarian regimes sitting on the UN human rights council would probably be a better use of time and resources, too, analysts said.
But despite publicly displaying complete ignorance by demanding an investigation even as several had been ongoing for weeks, Pillays comments did attract some domestic support. The so-called Florida Civil Right Association (FCRA), for example, released a statement praising the UNs demand for an investigation.
We believe that the United Nations involvement can help prevent another Trayvon Martin situation in other countries across the world, claimed FCRA boss Willie David, perhaps unaware of the UN's record. The shooting death of Trayvon Martin and Floridas Stand-Your-Ground Law have created a worldwide movement that calls into question how justice is delivered to victims of color.
Before taking on her role as self-styled global guardian of human rights, Pillay served on the so-called International Criminal Court, a body of dubious legitimacy that purports to have jurisdiction over aggression, war crimes, and other matters. The United States is not a party to the self-appointed global judiciary, though the "court" recently claimed to be investigating American troops for war crimes in Libya.
It was not immediately clear what Pillay hoped to accomplish by making the half-baked comments especially since numerous investigations into the Martin shooting are already underway. Besides, the UN, of course, has no jurisdiction in America, let alone in states criminal law. If publicity and more race agitation was the goal, however, her controversial remarks may have achieved their purpose.
This isn’t satire?
BTW certain people will be satisfied with nothing less than Zimmerman’s blood.
And even that will not be enough.
It will never be enough, for them.
Perfect timing. DHS has all those hollow point .40 calibre rounds, the NDAA is spiffed up, the UN has always wanted a gun ban, our votes will be counted offshore by Obama donors. A perfect storm come this fall........
Somebody point this jug head towards North Korea.
