College chess champs uproot, move to Missouri
Associated Press – Fri, Apr 6, 2012

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — It was one of the most brazen moves in the chess world since the Najdorf Sicilian Defense, perhaps even the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit.

Fresh off her second straight national championship, the legendary chess coach at Texas Tech is jumping to another school and taking all the top members of the team with her. No one has ever seen anything like it in intercollegiate competition, not even among powerhouse basketball and football teams that are worth many millions of dollars.

Similar deals are not uncommon in academia, where a star professor recruited by another school may bring along a cadre of researchers, lab assistants and post-docs. But in the competitive realm, the practice is virtually unheard of.

"There's no equivalent," said Mike Hoffpauir, a Virginia consultant who helped organize the recent President's Cup chess tournament, the game's version of the Final Four, which was won by Texas Tech. "If the coach from Kentucky gets hired by UCLA this summer, the whole team's not going to go with him."

My son’s graduate advisor at University of Washington moved his whole class (those who wanted to go) to the University of Florida in the 1990s to establish a beefed up department of materials science engineering. Part of the deal was that UF gave full credit for all of the classes that the students had already taken.

I was an alt on my college chess team. As a 6’ 180 lb karate student I didn’t have any problem with jocks. Maybe they saw us doing katas in front of the gym?

Chess is a notoriously competitive sport. The players will go to any length to win.

I once played in a tournament where one of the competitors got his girlfriend to sit next to him wearing an extremely revealing sun dress. By extremely revealing, I mean that she had no bra on and the dress was REALLY low cut.

She also was hotter than a firecracker.

Distracting to say the least.

Hard to say. At the least it is unusual. I thought there was a rule that if a team member transfers, he/she has to sit out one year.

"It was a very easy decision," said Georg Meier, a freshman from Trier, Germany. "When the program decided to move to St. Louis, I didn't have to think twice."

Well, if you had a chance to get out of Lubbock, that would be an easy decision.

"Chess is a notoriously competitive sport."

A sport ?

That sounds like a bit of a stretch.
