Starring Andy Garcia and Peter O'Toole, "For Greater Glory" is a compelling war film based on the true story of the Cristero War -- a conflict caused by the brutal government crackdown on the Mexican Catholic Church in the 1920s.
Released at a time when religious freedom, especially for Catholics, is being attacked in the United States and elsewhere, the picture is also particularly timely.
Beautifully shot across the plains of northern and central Mexico and accompanied by a stirring soundtrack by Hollywood composer James Horner, the movie takes the audience through the harrowing violence and suppression of the Church in Mexico during that time....
...[T]he 1910 Mexican Revolution led to an increase in Marxist anticlericalism, made worse by the fact that the Church hierarchy later lent its support to a counterrevolutionary called Victoriano Huerta.
A series of political overthrows followed, culminating in a revolutionary called Álvaro Obregón becoming president in late 1920. Obregón then selectively applied the anticlerical laws in the new Constitution, which worsened when Calles became president in 1924. Calles’ rule led to the desecration of religious objects, persecution of the clergy, anticlerical legislation and, eventually, the seizure of Church property, the expulsion of all foreign priests, and the closure of monasteries, convents and religious schools.
In response....the Cristero War was declared on 1 January 1927. The Cristeros, whose battle cry was "¡Viva Cristo Rey!"..won a number of victories against the “Federales” but also suffered many losses.
By June 1929, a peace agreement was eventually brokered through the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Dwight Whitney Morrow...By the time the peace deal was signed, the war was said to have claimed some 90,000 lives
Remarkably, as the revolutionary party went on to rule Mexico for the next 70 years, details of the conflict were largely hidden from many Mexicans....

It looks like a remake, (at least in concept) of “The Fugitive”. A John Ford film in which Henry Fonda played a Mexican priest during the anti-church purges.
It is clearly a Mexican setting 100%,, but it was portrayed as a something that happens everywhere. Incredible movie,, don’t miss it if you have the chance.
Great movie,, and at first, i thought it was kinda a cop out to start the movie with a disclaimer, saying how this is no specific country,,, that it is a story that has happened in many nations.
But as you watch the movie,, that was dead on. And the things experienced by the Priest played by Fonda, indeed bring to mind so many anti-religious abuses by governments despots, all around this planet.
The true story of the Christeros is fascinating, and the heroism of the peasants is breathtaking.
The Masons played a nefarious role in the persecution of the Church (the bombing of the tilma occurred in 1917), and Wilson provided arms to the Mexican government:

rejoiced over the news: “Great news! The more priests they kill in
Mexico, the happier I shall be!” An American pastor, indignant about
the outraging of the nuns in Vera Cruz, received this reply from Wilson’s
personal representative: “After prostitution, the worst thing in Mexico
is the Catholic Church. Both must disappear!”13
On May 28, Calles received the Masonic medal of merit
from the hands of the Great Commander of the Scottish rite in Mexico. On
July 12, the following communique appeared in the press: “International
Masonry accepts responsibility for everything that is happening in Mexico,
and is preparing to mobilize all its forces for the methodic, integral
application of the agreed upon program for this country.”18

That would probably have been a surprise to Masons in say Iowa. Lind was a well hated man in the US and his ideological rigidity and ignorance of the local terrain made him in his own way as bad a US representative as Ambassador Wilson, Huerta’s buddy who he replaced.
When you wrote President Camacho I am sure you meant President Lázaro Cárdenas instead. Both Cárdenas and his predecessor Plutarco Elías Calles were interesting figures. Calles is even thought by some to be the author of "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre". Calles was a former bartender in Los Angeles before returning to Mexico after the revolution, and when his term as president ended, he had believed that Cárdenas would be a safe choice as his successor, a weakling that he could push around to preserve his influence. He was wrong: at the first whiff of a plot against him Cárdenas had Calles rounded up in the middle of the night and dumped across the border, back from where he came. It was reported that Calles was astonished that he survived, and was not shot out of hand, as he would have had done were the situation reversed.

Yes, it’s mostly in English, with some Spanish sprinkled in.
Hmm...didn’t know Peter O’Toole was still alive. I will have to catch the movie though, that period of time has always interested me.
