The strongly localized interaction process of ultrashort laser pulses with tissue makes femtosecond lasers a powerful tool for eye surgery.
These lasers are now routinely used in refractive surgery and other forms of surgery of the anterior segment of the eye. Several clinical laser systems also offer options for corneal grafting and the potential use of ultrashort pulse lasers in glaucoma surgery has been the object of several recent studies which have shown promising results.
While devices aimed for interventions in clear tissue may be based on available solid state or fibre laser technology, the development of tools for surgery in more strongly scattering tissue has to account for the compromised tissular transparency and requires the development of optimized laser sources.
The present paper focuses on surgery of clear and pathological cornea as well as sclera. It aims to give an overview over typical medical indications for ultrashort pulse laser surgery, the optics of the tissues involved, the available laser technology, the laser–tissue interaction process, and possible future developments.

I had extensive laser surgery of my retina and sclera in my right eye in August ~ by a guy who did what the researchers report in this piece.
Today, just short of 2 years after the first eye problem I had my latest eye check up and so far NO GLACOMA ~ something frequently found after this sort of surgery ~ in the past. Everything is still in place; capillaries and veins all in good shape; cornea clear, sclera right color; no floaters, etc.
These guys care ~ and new uses and standards for laser surgery get tighter, better, more advanced.
Odds are good that many of you reading this piece and working your way through the referenced documents will have your vision preserved by a young man or woman using this piece of science.

Anything about Macular Degeneration, Macular occlusions?
I worked on the predecessor laser to this one. It is good to hear that people are getting positive results. Sometimes in the midst of trying to create useful stuff I get lost in the details and forget the much bigger picture.

Macular degeneration is always a hot topic here ~ I went through most of the articles referenced from that one and there’s some interesting pieces related to some quite diverse topics ~ but just this week there was ANOTHER piece of research out about using laser light tuned to diffusion characteristics of other transparent tissues ~ which is relevant to macular degeneration. I didn’t post that one because I wanted to report that this other stuff WORKED FOR ME ~ Be back at you with the other one tomorrow. You do know this was very difficult for me to post since they gave me the three eyeball drug treatment today ~
Being half way through cataract surgery at a sizable but local eye clinic, has literally opened my eyes to just how professional, knowledgeable and technically advanced this segment of the medical community actually is. I have been mightily impressed.
Truly amazing the procedures that docs have at their disposal these days.
The hot thing for wet macular degeneration is stem cell therapy. A clinical trial has started in the land down under for a single injection SC treatment.
The buckle slows down your eyeball. It can take half a year or longer before you get your muscles trained/retrained. Lots of strange stuff until then.
Lots of luck with this and remember any sight at all is a blessing from God.
