At the link is a cleaned up recording that was available on youtube late last week. Upon hearing it, I can see why the residents are a bit rattled.

Maybe there will be whisps of smoke coming up from underground soon, like that town in PA — Centralia, I think. Any old coal mines under there?

I am opening myself up to being 100% wrong here, but I sure got a sneaky suspicion some kids are having a lot of fun, and either will get caught soon or someone will not be able to keep their mouth shut and spill the beans all by themselves.
Just a hunch.
If so, kudos to the kids for fooling everyone for so long, and I hope the law takes it easy on them.
Just good ol’ boys,
Never meaning no harm.
Beats all you ever saw,
gettin’ in trouble with the law
Since the day they was born.
Making their way,
the only way they know how.
But that’s just a little bit more
than the law will allow.

That recorded "boom" is not a simple, percussive impulse like an explosion. It has a sustained "pitch" -- like a tympani beat...
Used to work near a petroleum storage tank farm. The tanks made "boong" sounds like that when they expanded or contracted with changing temperature.
