Christianity has been under threat before --> fromt the persecutions of Paul, to the persecutions of Nero and then later Domitian, Diocletian etc. then when Rome fell to Alaric, there was even more of doubt. Then the attacks of the Magyar, Saracens, Turks, Vikings etc. etc.
