The mass shooting that killed two people and wounded 12 others near North Miami began with a perceived sign of disrespect at the wake of a man who had jumped to his death from a shopping mall parking garage.
The act of reaching into the casket to touch the body of 21-year-old Morvin Andre escalated into a deadly conflict among gang members who opened fire into a gathering of mourners.
They had gone to the Funeraria Latina funeral home Friday night to grieve for Andre, who had died March 16 after jumping from a parking garage at Aventura Mall. The remembrance of his death turned into one of the bloodiest public shootings in recent South Florida history.
The end of Andres life was traumatic, but in a different way.
He had tried to use a stolen platinum American Express card to buy something possibly a belt at Bloomingdales, according to Aventura police. Store employees suspected credit-card fraud.
Andre took off, running into the malls parking garage and then up a stairwell to the fourth floor. From the floor below, employees called out that they just wanted to ask him some questions.
Instead, Andre jumped. It was a 22-and-a-half-foot drop.

I'd SOOO pay to see that.
Have them all lined up and jumping one-by-one - the crowd roaring after every splat.
“New Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church. Primitive part is apparently accurate.”
Inaccurate and innappropriate.
The “Dear Departed” certainly showed the primitive thought processes and behaviors typical of the Urban Feral population.
However, that in no way can be tied to teh church which does do its best to actively remind its members of the basics of the teachings of a certaain Jewish carpenter of long ago.
As that carpenter would not have tolerated the Urban Feral behavior patterns, and as this church follows those beliefs, I suggest that conflation of the deceased Urban Feral with the church in which his funeral was being held is, arguably, an error.
Please not that I refrained from comment on the younger members/visitors of that church, as their behavior speaks for itself
Drive-By Shooting At North Miami Funeral For Morvin Andre Injures 14 Mourners, Kills
Gunmen in a passing car fired into a crowd of mourners outside a Northeast Miami-Dade funeral home Friday night, injuring at least 14 people and leaving 2 dead, according to preliminary reports.
Officiating pastor A.D. Lenoir said services for Andre had just concluded, leaving a large crowd standing outside Funeraria Latina Emanuel on West Dixie Highway when at least one person inside a white Pontiac or Impala opened fire around 9 p.m.
“His death was an accident, the result of a very bad decision.”
Yes, of course you are right. Maybe that’s a local thing, they rule any death by your own actions a suicide even if it wasn’t meant to be.
This is really some story. I find it hard to believe the guy wasn’t in a gang, otherwise why would a. the gangsters be at his funeral and b. take such “offense” at whatever some person did.
Where’s rev Al?
People frequently, maybe usually, survive a 22 foot drop, depending of course on what you land on.
But I suspect they don’t often hit the ground, jump to their feet and run away at high speed.
Except in movies.
They make it sound like it was suicide. More likely he died while trying to escape by jumping from the building.
Police had not released information about the shooters, only that a white car may have been involved.
Heh.
You can bet there won't be any snitchn'.
I was referring only to the adjective “primitive”. Whatever the implications of a religious institution calling itself a Church, when modified by the word primitive, you have to wonder what religious doctrine is actually preached or followed.
His mugshot (from a previous arrest) shows him much darker than the program for his funeral. They turned him white after his death?!

This one is part of the currently "larger" wing known as the African-American Primitive Baptist Church ~ and they are also known to use musical instruments.
Theologically this division of Baptists are probably as close as you can get to the Christian Church Movement and still use Baptist in the name.
Now, about using their building for a memorial service, there are folks out there who RENT church facilities for that purpose. Can't tell from the news pieces what the reason is in this case so looked up the church on the net and they have some videos. In one the preacher announces a new Saturday "HEAT SERVICE". In another there's a PRAISE SERVICE. They use a drum set while standing in place and bouncing (No Dancing in this group).
Seems appropriate here.
Correct. Except the surface he landed on may not have been at grade. Possibly he jumped to a second-story roof, which would be about the right height.
“Money Marv” should have been called “Someone else’s Money Marv” since it was all ovbiously stolen and he sure as hell didn’t earn it and his family thought that name was CUTE!
“senior police commander told CBS4 investigative reporter Jim DeFede that Andre had some connection to several South Florida gangs and some of those gang members were in attendance at his wake to pay their respects”
But he was a good boy says his Momma. /s
No sign of Jackson or Sharpton protesting these crimes.
Actually, Shakespeare laid out the dynamics perfectly in Romeo and Juliet.
The young bucks of the local aristocracy have nothing to do but strut around and get into trouble, and they react exactly like this. Tybalt, Benvolio, Mercutio, et al.
But they do talk a lot purtier! :)
Not being a Christian, I am not too familiar with their nomenclature/taxonomy, but I think it refers to a form of Christianity more akin to what Jesus and his followers practiced than a later and more organized form.
Behavior of the funeral attendees/visitors certainly was primitive in the worst sense of the word.
If any of these employees are white, than the whole thing is their fault.
You got that right.
If I was the coroner, I'd have ruled it a justifiable suicide.
