Why Rick Santorum's once-generous lead in Wisconsin is eroding
Christian Science Monitor ^ | March 30, 2012 | Mark Guarino

By the time Mitt Romney arrives in Wisconsin Friday – his first campaign stop in the state before its GOP primary on Tuesday – his challenger Rick Santorum will have already become a familiar face. Mr. Santorum has been in Wisconsin since last weekend and has dined, bowled, and played shuffleboard with residents in every pocket of the state. He’s even tossed a football at Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers.

Santorum’s once-generous lead in Wisconsin is eroding. In February, the former US senator polled at 34 percent among the state’s likely Republican voters, while Mr. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, trailed far back at 18 percent, according to a Marquette University Law School poll.

Current Wisconsin polling shows Romney leading, 39 percent to Santorum’s 31 percent.

What happened? The easy answer is money. The Romney campaign is armed with seemingly unlimited campaign resources to flood local airwaves and phone banks, resulting in the candidate not necessarily having to step foot in the state until just before its voters head to the booths.

By early this week in Wisconsin, combined spending by the Romney campaign and Restore Our Future, a pro-Romney “super political-action committee,” totaled about $2 million in television advertising, much of it negative. By contrast, Santorum’s campaign had spent under $100,000 by last Sunday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and the Red White and Blue Fund, a super PAC backing Santorum, had spent about $300,000.

But spending may not be the key factor in why Santorum is slipping in Wisconsin polls. Since February, Santorum’s positions on social issues such as his opposition to birth control, as well as his comments that President Obama is a “snob” for advocating college education, have dominated the media’s coverage of his campaign – possibly turning off independent voters, particularly women.

John McAdams, a political scientist at Marquette University in Milwaukee, says what Santorum meant in those comments was “not terrible,” but they became gaffes because he could not articulate his positions in a way that sounded reasonable.

Santorum really never had much chance anyway. He was simply the last non-Romney standing - and that was only because no one took him seriously in the first place.

The contraception stuff was enough to make him not a credible alternative for many, perhaps most, of the people looking for a non Romney. Once it became known that Rick said the following (on video last October):

"One of the things I will talk about that no President has talked about before is I think the dangers of contraception in this country, the whole sexual libertine idea. Many in the Christian faith have said, 'Well, that’s okay. Contraception’s okay.' It’s not okay..."

...many conservatives grasping at some alternative to Mitt struck Santorum from the list. Sorry, but we just don't need a national conversation on why contraception is "not okay". Any candidate that thinks we do just can't be taken seriously and would be a sure-bet to drag the campaign into long ago settled social issues that would be a guaranteed loser.

And his use of a four letter word does not impress the Christian conservatives who are his base. That slip of the tongue can be traced to his slip in the polls. Because of his profanity, and his flippant answer, many think he is a phoney.

I have to agree. Romney spent 60 million in 2008 and got nowhere. Money is over-rated by the beltway whorehouse. Santorum has opened himself up to negative coverage, when he didn't have to. That's the story, like it or not.

I am sure a pro-abortion liberal snob is much more suitable for the modern, hyphenated-conservative GOP ticket.

I’m sure it had nothing to do with rick claiming that people who defend themselves have a “sick mind”.

One of the most damaging things that santo did to himself, was the Bull Sh*t comment to the New York Times. All the major networks have been playing “highlights” of it all week end.

And all the reactions have been, not so good. He is supposed to be this high and mighty Christian but comes across as a whiny, angry hypocrite. And most of the evaluations and polls also see him that way. It's his own fault. He is just not a very viable candidate.

That was the final straw for me.

I never cared for his sanctimonious ass anyway.

This was disappointing. Sometimes I think Santorum doesn’t want to win.

In WA state, the Ron Paul Campaign has made a deal with the Santorum campaign to throw all the Paul delegates to Santorum.

This was reported and confirmed by our local newspaper, the Bellingham Herald. GOP leaders are furious.

We tried to warn those who blindly went for him. We warned them that he could not win the nomination or the general, and that he would just split the vote and guarantee a Romney win.

Well guess what? Hello Reality!

Yeah. That was disappointing.

But Romney is a POS so I won’t vote for him either.

LOL! You shouldn't talk about Santorum like that!

Since he voted for planned Parenthood and Abortion funding and was formerly a proclaimed “Pro-Choice” advocate before he ran for office.

So be careful how you throw those accusations around, they have a habit of coming right back at hypocritical phonies like Santorum.
