Four giant card-payment processors and large U.S. banks that issue debit and credit cards were hit by a data-security breach after third-party services provider Global Payments Inc discovered its systems were compromised by unauthorized access.
It was not immediately clear how many cardholders became victims of the breach, which affected MasterCard Inc, Visa Inc, American Express Co and Discover Financial Services, as well as banks and other franchises that issue cards bearing their logos.
U.S. law enforcement authorities including the Secret Service are investigating and MasterCard said it has hired an independent data-security organization to review the incident.

..that you pay well to say?
I was quite recently a victim of such fraud/theft. Some idiot in Ireland, of all places, got hold of my ATM card number and had a field day, cleaning out my checking account in one day.
Thank God I bank at a credit union that holds you not liable for a penny of such fraud. Got it all back in a couple days, but a lot of merchants in Ireland got stuck for some pretty hefty tabs (electronics, hardware, etc., etc.).
Oh, that’s just wonderful.
Oh, goody! Won’t this be fun!
Great— compromised for over a month, from 1/21/12 to 2/25/12. Nice work.
You won’t even notice it.
Don’t get me wrong. Not saying it’s good.
Just saying you won’t even notice it.
Can't wait for that "Cashless Society" all the Socialists keep nattering about...
I got hit for over $17k on a Sears Gold VISA card last year, traced to Russian purchases, and Sears ate all of the fraud. I’d had that Sears account for many, many yrs.
The Sears’ rep told me that they have 2,500 people just working on CC fraud cases/intel, within the company and that’s why the raised interest rates on cc/cash purchases and monthly balance fees. They canceled card, issued a new account and card.
After it was resolved, I paid it off, closed the card and get my local bank’s CC. No problems yet. Fingers crossed, but it’s going to happen again sometime, the odds are. Just too much CC money out there for thieves
It was a back in early Feb and I never did get a bill on my CC account for it.
It happened once before too, you get the item ordered but it never gets billed to you.
I’ve only got a mid four-figure limit on my card and pay any charges off each month. A few months ago the company doubled the limit. Had ‘em put it back down as I had no need for that much, as well as the risk of something like this happening.
Two years ago I got in an argument with Master Card. Someone charged $16000 to my card to buy a Suzuki motorcycle in Brisbane, Australia.
here’s the zinger. MasterCard had just sent me a new card the week before. The card had a new account number on it, a new 3-digit security code and, the best part, I had not activated the card yet. It took me 3 months of arguing with them before they took off the charges and almost a year before they fixed the currency exchange fees.
Same thing happened to my son. Some idiot was using his card at random locations in Boston, which is clearly not in Texas, where my son goes to work every day.
Wow. Lucky you, I guess.
Why would Master Card be so horsey about removing a charge that was clearly not conducted by you? (Were you in Australia at the time?) I’d have had to close my account with them once things were straightened out.
Interesting my mc got hit for 6500 at a motorcycle shop in Australia 2-3 years ago- at the same time another 6000 to some place else in the US some charity(fake?)-total just below my limit(how did they know) the fraud dept called me immediately asked if I made the purchase after I said no they immediately canceled the card I was never billed and issued a new card.
Many moons ago (late 90s) I got charged for Skiing Apparel bought in Aspen Colorado (about 700 bucks worth) I called Amex and told them Not only that I did not Buy anything in Aspen but I don't Ski and I've never been there. (at the time) They assured me the Charges were valid because The Store had swiped my card.
I told her OK then could she check the charge that was right before it and if they had swiped the card also. She told me it had been swiped also. It was a charge for a restaurant in Columbus Ohio and according to the time stamps on both charges I ate Lunch at around Noon in Columbus Ohio then somehow was in Aspen 18 minutes later to buy 700 bucks worth of Ski Clothes.
Her manager fixed the charge and waived the yearly fee for my Amex Gold for the Next Year and sent me a new card.
We are under attack by the chinese, russia, and our government..
Smart. I will think about doing that, but I do pay-off the balance in 29 days on the one CC I have, to avoid interest. I’m totally debt-free, owning everything and owing zero. Only use the CC for small online purchases now.
