I was quite recently a victim of such fraud/theft. Some idiot in Ireland, of all places, got hold of my ATM card number and had a field day, cleaning out my checking account in one day.

Thank God I bank at a credit union that holds you not liable for a penny of such fraud. Got it all back in a couple days, but a lot of merchants in Ireland got stuck for some pretty hefty tabs (electronics, hardware, etc., etc.).

I got hit for over $17k on a Sears Gold VISA card last year, traced to Russian purchases, and Sears ate all of the fraud. I’d had that Sears account for many, many yrs.

The Sears’ rep told me that they have 2,500 people just working on CC fraud cases/intel, within the company and that’s why the raised interest rates on cc/cash purchases and monthly balance fees. They canceled card, issued a new account and card.

After it was resolved, I paid it off, closed the card and get my local bank’s CC. No problems yet. Fingers crossed, but it’s going to happen again sometime, the odds are. Just too much CC money out there for thieves

Same thing happened to my son. Some idiot was using his card at random locations in Boston, which is clearly not in Texas, where my son goes to work every day.

Never use your ATM card except at an automatic teller machine for banking business. Just because it has credit card logos on it doesn't mean it should be used as a credit card (or check card, or whatever they call it).

In fact, when they introduced credit card logos, I called the 800 number and complained. Within 24 hours I had a new card without logos, that can't be used as a credit card.

I have an AX card. Why would I need to use my friggin' bank card as a credit card?
