This is a programmatic piece where Rossini adds subtitles to the score as though it were a silent movie. At the beginning, you hear the sound of a train's bell summoning the passengers.

0:30 -- The steam engine starts and the piano creates the choo-choo sound of a locomotive.

2:06 -- A steam whistle.

2:30 -- The train slows down and makes a station stop.

4:00 -- The train starts up again.

6:00 -- A terrible train wreck!

6:44 -- An upward arpeggio signals a group of souls going to heaven.

6:54 -- A downward arpeggio signals a group of souls going to hell.

7:00 -- The funeral march at the church.

8:30 -- "The sadness of the heirs", which is a raucous dance of joy.

What a cool piece! I LOVE all kinds of train songs, but never
had a “classical” one before! :)
