Newt Gingrich called House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) endorsement of Mitt Romney a big win for the former Massachusetts governor.
"It's a great achievement for Mitt Romney," Gingrich said Friday on Charlie Sykes's radio show. "Paul Ryan is one of the rising stars in the Republican Party."
Gingrich said both the endorsement from Ryan and from Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) earlier in the week were big gets for Romney. Absent from the entire interview was any criticism by Gingrich toward Romney or Rick Santorum, both of whom have maintained much stronger leads over the former House Speaker in recent polls.
The lack of any criticism is part of Gingrich's revamped campaign strategy: a spokesman for Gingrich recently announced that he would refrain from criticizing his primary opponents and instead focus on making it to the Republican National Convention.
Additionally, Gingrich said in the interview that although Romney isn't the inevitable 2012 Republican presidential nominee, if he does get the 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the nomination, he and the rest of the Republican presidential field would rally around Romney.
"I have no doubt that once he gets 1,144 delegates we will all unify and support him," Gingrich added. "I think Mitt Romney is clearly the frontrunner. I think he will probably get 1,144 but I think he has to earn it."
Gingrich's comments came a few days after he and Romney had a private meeting ahead of the Louisiana primary on Saturday...Gingrich said he had also recently met with Santorum and that all three candidates "talk regularly" about defeating President Obama.

To be fair, if Gingrich hadn’t called Ryan’s budget ‘right-wing social engineering’, perhaps he might have had a shot at an endorsement.
To those suggesting that Newt is selling out- I genuinely don’t believe that’s true. If that were the case, the smartest thing to do would be to withdraw and endorse Romney- and that would end the race.
Newt’s only hope is to be the consensus candidate at the convention. One can’t be a “consensus” candidate by tearing down Rick and Romney.
With the left/right media and establishments now in full court press for Romney (for their own selfish reasons), Newt is trying to get to the convention and remain viable by flying under the radar.
Newt has some of the best policies, but Romney is the supply-side candidate and the vanguard of Reaganomics.
Its going to be a long 4 years during Obamas 2nd term.

America will deserve what she gets.
??? That is a NO BRAINER.
OBAMA = total destruction of our COUNTRY within 6 months of the 2nd term.
ROMNEY = although any conservative with a brain will need to hold their nose and vote, it will bide us time and will be one small small notch above Obama. We will at least have a second chance of voting if Romney gets elected.
With Obama it will be CURTAINS! OVER!
I'm still hoping that Santorum or even Newt at a Brokered Convention will pull this out.
Gawd, to think these slime ball establishment bastards have managed to pull off another theft.

It’s our fault. The Conservatives run 5 candidates to every one Moderate and the Conservatives split the vote and the Moderate wins. Simple.
This is not news, but realitly politics.
Politics is the only track this competition runs on, in the absence of more Novembers, like the results we had last year in the mid-terms.
Without more Tea Party mid-term wins, what can be expected of Newt?
We are not going to get any short cuts. We can not escape building a movement any more than the Marxists could escape building theirs. They just started earlier, while we were at the beach with our feet kicked up.
I say it starts with our plans for primary night. Will we give a large enough damn to show up at our precinct meetings and become delegates, or not?
Whining is no longer going to cut it, patriots, and its time to start looking around locally for leaders in our own communities who are articulate and persuasive enough to get a strategy in place, increase our numbers and our morale and rebuild the schools, churches and institutions that matter.
Rush L just said that rumors are floating that Gingrich wants to be SoS if Romney gets elected.
Newt is not saying anything different than he ever has
*****************
The only thing “different” and somewhat disheartening, is that he said Romney will probably get the 1144- whereas, up til this point, he’s been saying that Romney would not.
I think this change is likely because Rick is losing steam- and might lose both Wis and Pa-—
Otherwise, I agree with you- Newt’s statement is consistent with everything he has said prior to today.
Amen. Anyone who listens to that craphole obama plotting with the Russians and then takes pride in sitting at home or voting for a Fantasy Party candidate on election day is a selfish or naive Onanistic moron
Romney is the supply-side candidate and the vanguard of Reaganomics.
***************
With due respect, my friend- that may or may not be so. That’s the point. Because he has no core, no one knows what Romney will do.
AND, best of all, could you imagine Newt going against Biden in a debate?!........The result would be PRICELESS!
Respectfully Tom, I don’t consider Rush a credible source on this primary-— he’s always been for Romney.
Now, please don’t flame- only because I’ve made this argument over a series of threads— and don’t want this thread to end up about limbaugh. It’s merely my opinion. Thanks.
The moment that happens, (and probably soon) Newt will drop out and probably join Romney in order to beat Obama. Romney would be smart to pick Newt as a running mate. That kind of conservative voice on his side, would greatly ease the pain at the polls for most voters.
Agree with you. In the winter 2008, exasperated, I wrote Gov. Palin, and suggested that she announce that she would not seek re-election as Governor- but instead, start an enterprise instructing ground level constituencies on how to reform local government. She could have done this by CD, tele-communications, and video.
Probably didn’t make it through the millions of other suggestions— or was summarily rejected. -:)
But, did honestly believe she would have been the perfect person to organize the grassroots- which is, as you argue, has to be done.
That's really absurd. The only one where there have been hints of bias towards has been Santorum and a considerable amount of bias against Romney pouring over his past flip flops and how problematic his health care record has been in providing a contrast to Obama, etc. He's always been "for" Romney by always pointing out negative information about him throughout the process?
“ell have another Dole/Bush/McLame candidate who is:
Pro-Abortion
Pro-High Taxes
Pro-Homosexual Lifestyle
Pro-Mandatory Health Care shoved down our throats.
Pro-Appeasement at all liberal shenanigans
Its sad that people like Newt, Palin, Bachmann (my favorite), Bolton, and Santorum are not anywhere in the race and, therefore, were stuck . . . again . . . with a certified liberal. I am so fed up!”
And we will get the Dream Act or some form of republican amnesty. White Newt was talking to Romney. Rubio, Hutchinson and Kyl were discussing it. You add Gingrich’s ideas as he discussed in the debates and something will be crafted. Comprehensive reform.
God save us.
The best we can hope for now is, that Newt gets the VP
***************
Actually Psych, the only way I would wish that Newt became VP- would be if Romney had diagnosed existing dementia- and had to be replaced immediately under the 25th Amend. because he couldn’t remember how to get to the White House.
On a serious note, Newt would be a bad choice for any administrative position, imo— he leads, he doesn’t follow.
